transmission questions

i just recently bought a 2002 S10 LS. it had 57k miles on it. i want to change the trans filter and fluid. when i went to the auto parts store the guy asked me if it had overdrive or not. most vehicles i've known to have overdrive had the circle around the d on the gear indicator on either the console or the steering wheel. my truck only has 1 2 3 D. so i assume it does not have overdrive? and his second question was does it have the shallow or deep pan. as this is the first s10 i have owned i did not know this. so anyone who can help me with either question it would be appreciated.

yes you have a overdrive. When you are in the D postion that is overdrive on the 4L60E. I have no idea about the pan

I don't know what in the world he was looking at but all 2002 S10's have overdrive.For that matter all 700R4/4L6O/4L6OE transmissions have overdrive.I swear they hire dumbass people at parts stores anymore.Anyway here is the diffeence in the filters and gaskets for deep and shallow pan.

Just get under the truck and look at the shape of the pan.If yours is 2wd it probably has the shallow pan and 4wd has the deep.That and the pick up tube on the deep will be longer.If ya feel like measuring the deep is 2-7/8in deep and the shallow is 2 1/4 deep.Hope this helps ya out.Oh and the shallow pan is flat while the deep has stepped bottom.
