View Full Version : Slicks?

I got out to my local drag strip last year, and had an awesome time. Aside from missing a shift into second on one run, I think I did okay for a rookie. Anyhow, my biggest problem by far was getting traction off the line (best 60 ft was 2.565). How much of a difference do DOT approved slicks make? I'm looking at maybe picking up some MT ET Street radials over the winter. My question is, are they worth spending the money, over street tires?
(right now im running 235 Yokohamas)

It's about the difference between an "A" cup and a "D" cup. Yup, that big.

Traction is a huge deal and if you ain't got it your times WILL suffer believe me.Slicks are the best way to get traction to drop those times.I just traded for a set of Comp BFG T/A Drag Radials for the track next year.

Hmm big difference you say. I'll guess I'll have to price some out. See if I can find some decent steel rims for em too.

How are you launching? I mean yeah of course slicks are going to help you hook up... but before you get them if you get your launch down you might hook up A LOT better. When I would spray a 100 shot of juice I could easily spin all the way through my 60ft if I wasn't watching what I was doing. This was on 245/50/16 street tires (Cooper Cobras). My best time was 14.72 and I never could get any faster. I could get close but I just couldn't get traction with the juice. I'm sure I could have spent some more money and got a progressive nitrous controller to assist in traction but that's all over with now.
What kind of mods do you have done? Other then what's in your sig.

That's about it, what's in the sig. Crane 1439811 cam, 1.6 rockers, and no muffler as far as power mods. I was running 235 Yoko street tires @28 psi. I probably could have gone a little lower on air pressure. It was a really hot day, which I don't think was helping. Those tires really aren't very good on the track though. I did a pretty good burnout to heat them up, and still the launch sucked, and they also spun pretty good into second, and even 3rd, without even powershifting.

The white van in the video I was racing switched to M/T Drag radials. Picked up 1.5 mph and damn near a tenth from the change alone. And she's running mid to low 12's.
BUT, figure 5k miles max on street driving. Yup, that soft.

Got a price on those MT ET street radials today. $200 for either 255/50/16 or 275/60/15. Think it's worth it, ot woukd headers be more worthwhile?
Link to that vid Sparky?

If I was having traction problems, I'd sure as heck get the slicks before headers. Make a lot bigger difference.

If your plans are for all out racing slicks hands down but if it's your daily driver and you want some more power the headers would be a great mod.Get full length headers not shorty.I just got a set of brand new Headman full lengths for 75 bucks.I will post some pics of them tomorrow. For the price I couldn't pass them up and I think Headman makes a great set of headers. You can buy them new for around 160.
