Need Help!!!!!!!!!

hey guys my brother has a 2000 2.2 s10 automatic. When he tries to turn on his truck it makes a crazy sound like if the engine wants to blow up. When he turns the key the truck makes a high pitch sound and then sounds like if something is cracking. I don't think it's misfiring because sometimes it turns on and runs.(I know how a misfiring sounds and that sure doesn't sound like one) He hasn't had a tune up yet but the noise it is making doesn't sound like a tune will solve the problem. It makes a similar sound like when you battery is drained and it won't turn on but worse and not healthy. His car has about 120k. Let me know you guys think it is and hopefully we can fix it.

Does it start when he cranks it or does it just crank?

the car take about like ten minutes to start and makes a crazy sound it eventually it will turn on but the sound it makes it bad.

Sounds like a bad starter or a couple of broke teeth on the flywheel. What you think Tommy

we had a chat with him last night and came to the conclusion that it is a bad starter and told him to have it checked

Ya, I think either the starter gear is not kicking out, but the starter is cranking, or there are broken teeth on the flywheel or starter.
