View Full Version : MSD Ignition
I have a chance to grab a MSD 6AL brand new for a pretty good price.
In addition to the actual unit, what other items would be recomended to go with this?

Wiring harness to make the install easy. Jegs has them for cheap.

Jegs part number 121-8877 for 96-up
Ok, thanks!
I assume the stock coil will be fine?

Is that harness different for a 2.2 and a 4.3? Because I know I have the 2 coil packs bolted to the side of my motor and if I remember right the 4.3 has one start coil..

That part number I posted is for all 96-up single coil GM and the one I used on my 4.3.
Now part number 121-8876 (from Jegs) is for the dual connector. I think the dual connector will work with the 2.2 but this is just a guess.
In his profile he has a 1998 4.3 s-dime so I just assumed that this was the one he was going to put the MSD on.

Looking at getting an MSD 6A for my '01 4.3L Crew Cab. Just wanted to verify that this engine is the even fire using MSD p/n 6200 and not the odd fire engine using MSD p/n 6246. I'm assuming that I should get the MSD wiring harness also.
Where do you guys mount the MSD 6A? I looked for a place to mount a battery isolator and eventally gave up. There isn't a whole lot of room inside the engine bay. This is a 4x4 so there isn't any room under the battery tray for anything much larger than a pack of cigarettes.

6200 and the wiring harness would make the install a breeze.

In the above picture is where I mounted my nitrous 'noids but a lot of people put an ignition there.
However, I moved my battery to the bed and mounted my MSD in it's location shown below.

Mines in the middle of the fire wall.
When i get my blower installed it is probably moving to on top of the heater box.
Better pick up some rpm pills so you have a revlimiter that isnt set at like 7k

RPM pills??? I didn't even consider running that high rpms. Even if I'm pushing hard, the tranny has always shifted at or before 5000. Would the 6AL qualify if I really need to consider a rev limiter?
the 6al has a built in rev limiter. I didnt even think about the motors rev limiter...thinkin bout our drag car. my bad

I was thinking that centered on the firewall might be the only place to mount one of these. Without seeing it, I'm concerned that getting the Rotor and Cap off might be a PITA though.

If it's an automatic go with the 6A.
If it's a stick then you could go with a 6AL to get a rev limiter but then you are going to have to get all of the little RPM pills to set the rev limit.
I personally don't see the need for an aftermarket over rev limiter on a street vehicle. Most of the newer computer controlled cars/trucks have them and you can adjust them.
Now a 2 stage limiter is nice when you are at the line and you can hold it at one RPM waiting to launch. EVEN BETTER if it's a soft touch and the class you are in is foot brake only with no electronics... hehe... they'll never know.

I have a MSD 6A with the GM blaster coil. I didn't want to spend $20+ on a harness so I wired it up myself. I didn't feel any difference should I have, or did I just wire it up wrong. However the truck starts and runs no problem. I also have proformance 8mm spark plug wires along with Denso Irdium spark plugs, so I was really hopping to feel just alittle difference. Also I mounted mine just over the coolant tank.

Generally speaking, if the vehicle doesn't need HP ignition, you don't feel any gain. It just improves overall driveability at part throttle and adverse conditions.

Oh nice to know that after I spent like $300 for everything. I am just kidding I didn't feel any imporvement at wide open throttle, but at 1/4 or throttle less when I was driving regularly the truck moved quicker. I appears to me that the MSD allowed me to use less throttle to move at the same speed I would before the MSD.
