View Full Version : Tranmission Fluid
Hi,
I need to top my transmission fluid. Does anyone know what kind of fluid the 91 2.5L manual, 2wd, takes??????
Thanks,
Stevo
At the shop we always used Castrol Gear oil and were really happy with it.

The factory fluid is ATF (yes, in a manual tranny). If you use gear oil (90W, etc.) it will become harder to shift gears and near impossible in sub-freezing weather. An excellent alternative is Syncro-Mesh trans. fluid. Slippery as owl **** and GM recommends it. Kinda' pricey, but worth it IMO.
We used 75-90, but I would go with the synchromesh. We didnt have the option to use that there. Use the synchromesh.

Hmmm, never seen rear end oil in a standard. We used 10-30 motor oil.
But my knowledge and experience with manual trans is limited.

90W was the standard oil for manual transmissions until the late 70's early 80's. Believe me, when I first saw ATF in a gearbox, I 'bout ****. We started draining it out and putting 90W back in at first. OOPS! No shifting when cold.
'course, I've still got my points file from back when also. ;)
Speaking of points and such................;)
