Ok here is the low down guys... I'm going to make a batch of EGR limiters. I'm well aware of you being able restrict the EGR flow by buying 2 EGR gaskets and a piece of sheet metal. However, if you want an actual machined EGR Limiter like the one shown then post up. I need to get an idea of how many guys want if any.
THIS ITEM IS NOW FOR SALE IN THE S10PLANET STORE LOCATED AT http://store.s10planet.com

Here's what GM says;
General Information
Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) System Descriptionhttp://motoralldata.com/alldata/MOTOR~V31464278~C37357~R0~OB0~P3R0H~N/0/77993956/78154671/92727709/92727711/34853741/34857029/34857699/34858149/34849881/85695907/86454146/98877536
The control module (http://motoralldata.com/alldata/MOTOR~V31464278~C37357~R0~OD~N/0/77993956/78154671/92727709/92727711/34853741/34857029/56218937/57612703) command exclusively operates the linear exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) valve (1). The control module monitors the following various engine parameters:
The Throttle Position (TP) sensor
The Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP (http://motoralldata.com/alldata/MOTOR~V31464278~C37357~R0~OD~N/0/77993956/78154671/92727709/92727711/34853741/34857029/34857030/34857526))
The Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor
The EGR pintle position sensor
Output messages are then sent to the EGR system indicating the proper amount of exhaust gas (2) recirculation, with intake air (3), necessary in order to lower the combustion temperatures. This electronic metering of exhaust gas is 10 times faster than the vacuum-operated models as well as an improved diagnostic capabilities.
Positioned at the top of the linear EGR assembly are 5 terminal.
http://motoralldata.com/alldata/MOTOR~V31464278~C37357~R0~OB0~P3R0H~N/0/77993956/78154671/92727709/92727711/34853741/34857029/34857699/34858149/34849881/85695907/86454146/86454151
A pulse width modulated signal from the VCM enters the valve through an electrical connector which energizes the solenoid, or bobbin and coil, assembly (3). This causes the armature assembly (4), (6) to be pulled upward, lifting the pintle (5) a variable amount off the base.
The exhaust gas then flows from the exhaust manifold through the orifice into the intake manifold. The pintle position sensor (2) reads the height of the pintle, and the control module (http://motoralldata.com/alldata/MOTOR~V31464278~C37357~R0~OD~N/0/77993956/78154671/92727709/92727711/34853741/34857029/56218937/57612703) closes the loop on a desired position versus the actual position read. This changes the pulse width modulated command to the solenoid accordingly, until the actual pintle position equals the desired pintle position.
The linear EGR valve is unique in that the control module (http://motoralldata.com/alldata/MOTOR~V31464278~C37357~R0~OD~N/0/77993956/78154671/92727709/92727711/34853741/34857029/56218937/57612703) continuously monitors the pintle position. The control module adjusts the pintle position in order to obtain accurate flow, making linear EGR a Closed Loop system.
When the solenoid is de-energized, or the control module (http://motoralldata.com/alldata/MOTOR~V31464278~C37357~R0~OD~N/0/77993956/78154671/92727709/92727711/34853741/34857029/56218937/57612703) breaks the circuit, the pintle seals against the orifice, blocking the exhaust flow to the intake manifold.
Purpose
The Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) system lowers the oxides of nitrogen (NOx) emission levels created by the high combustion temperatures.
Operation
The EGR valve (http://motoralldata.com/alldata/MOTOR~V31464278~C37357~R0~OD~N/0/77993956/78154671/92727709/92727711/34853741/34857029/34857699/34872079) will open when the conditions of operation have been met. This allows the exhaust gasses to re-enter the combustion chamber. When too much exhaust gas is allowed to enter the chamber, the proper combustion will not occur. For this reason, only very little exhaust gas is allowed to re-enter the combustion chamber.
(Courtesy General Motors)
Now, that's what GM says. Bottom line, allowing exhaust gas (inert air, cannot support combustion) to mix with the incoming air/fuel mixture DOES lower combustion chamber temps. allowing increased timing w/o the associated "pinging". So, it's an easy, popular fix.
Highly effecient engines (Quad-4, Eco-Tec, etc.) don't even use egr valves. Why is that? They are also very powerful (hp per cu. in.). They efficiently burn the a/f mixture w/o the high combustion chamber temps. due to their design (4 valve, overhead cam).
What does this mean for us? Well, it ain't gonna get us fuel mileage points, that's for sure. BUT, by restricting or eliminating egr, we have more oxygen available for combustion. Which means..........
BINGO! The MAF will see more air, allowing for more fuel delivery. We derive our power from the fuel, so, at part throttle, the engine will become more powerful (efficient? ehhh) resulting in part throttle driveability increases.
I restricted mine first, then totally eliminated it. Big difference. But, pre-95 you use a chip to compensate (for elimination). Most 95 and later, you restrict it w/o a program. Works like a champ.
But remember, it does nothing for full throttle as egr has no effect there (no egr operation at full throttle).

This mod goes hand in hand with the throttle body restrictor plate mod.
There was at one time a "how to" on doing the egr mod with the one that I'm machining. I don't know where it ran off to though.
how about doing up some of the plates for the 92-95 engines?

1/8" holes in the plates for the pre '94's works fine. Will only throw a code occasionally. 1/8" mild steel is a decent material to work with. I've made several in the past with no complaints. I don't have time now to make any or I would help ya' out.

I don't see why wth plate wouldn't fit. So It's up to you guys. I know the plate will work for pre 96 and the fitting will work with 96-01. That being said I'm not going to tell you that the plate will work for 96-01 without testing it myself because I want to be able to stand behind what is sold and guarantee it.

and could you post a how too on this, i figure just remove the belt and ac unit then unscrew the egr and put the fitting it, is it that easy?
Joker2040
03-17-06, 04:03 PM
I didn't have to take off any of the ac stuff or belt. I'll see if I can't get you guys a how to.
Both parts shown look to be of very high qualitly, coming from a sumertime machinist. My boss always says if it looks like crap it probably is, but if it looks good it probably is good. Goes for a lot of things.
Joker, wouldnt the pre 96 work just as well on the 96 up? it appears to be the same shape, whether its the same size, i dont know, plus it would be easier to install the pre 96 ones. at least i would think so
The gasket is the same part number, so it would probably bolt on. However the egr valve to a/c compressor braket looks like it could be a problem.
hey joker, i respect that man, so still count me in for the inline fitting

That is the easiest way to get to the egr fitting.
A 3/8" socket to remove the belt. And the 4 13mm ish bolts for the compressor. One of them may be imposible to get to with a ratchet, so a 1/2" wrench, or an adjustable can substitute for that one. Don't take any of the fittings off of the a/c compressor, just unbolt it and set it aside with the plumbing atatched. The egr tube is a pain to try to wrastle into place in a cluttered space. It is right under the back of the a/c compressor.
Here is a picture, the egr valve is missing, but you can see the fitting that you have to get to.

To answer a previous question - "Will the plate style that goes under thr egr valve with the two egr valve gaskets work"?
YES it works, i'm a machinist myself and made one just like the picture oh, a year or so ago out of T6 6061 Aluminum. It's on my 1997 4X4 Blazer and have had no problems with it.
In my oppinion it's easier to put on, adjust hole size if needed to stop it from throwing any codes, and remove (if ever needed) than the inline pipe fitting and the only thing you need to remove it is a socket the size of the two bolts and 2 mins. (if that) of your time -
I hope this helps make up some minds and answer some questions about the interchange. Have a good one guys & gals ~

I have never touched the AC compressor when I installed one. It might make it easier if I did but I always worked around it.
As for the service engine light... Some people get them and some don't. If you just wanted to attempt to prevent it then you could go ahead and drill it out a little more before you put it on to prevent having to take it off and drilling it out then re-installing.

EDIT: It was a 5/32 inch drill bit. NOT 5/8! I was tired when I posted that.
I installed the EGER limiter without modifying it to see if the SES would come on. I figured it would. It didn't flash on until about 55 miles after the restricter was installed.
So far no problems. I feel it's a worthy mod.

Yes, unless you get a custom chip designed to eliminate the egr (amongst other things a custom chip can do).

1/8" holes are about as small as you go and not throw a code on pre '94 TBI. I still get a SES about once a month. I've had my plate in for about 3 years now.

my 94 TBI threw a code on the highway only with a/c on. a/c off no problems. the truck didnt run any different though with the CEL on. after shutting it off and restarting, the CEL was gone everytime.

That was the BEST $35.00 that I ever spent on the Blazer! I notice a quicker throttle response, and i notice the power that I gained. Not much, but it doesn't take as much throttle to get going. I reamed it out with a 5/32" drill so I wouldn't have any problems with the computer. I did remove the (4) 1/2" A/C bolts and moved the compressor out of the way. The only thing that I would recommend is to have a 7/8" wrench for the threaded egr pipe. In all it took me about 45 min to 1 hour. By far one of the cheapest mods, and well worth it. Well Joker2040 thank's for the EGR valve. Like I said It was the best $35.00 that I ever spent. Jim
I have one of the 96-01 versions of these that I never installed for sale. $30 shipped to the lower 48 states. E-mail jlp7t@hotmail.com if you're interested.

If I buy this 1991 S-10 Blazer, would you be able to machine one up for me? Or do I need another cpu for it to work right?
This wont work you you because the EGR system is different on the older models.
You would just have to make a restrictor or blockoff plate out of sheet metal.

Is it possible to trick the computer on a 91 4.3? Maybe some type of device that you could put on the end of the vacuum that goes to the egr valve, so the solenoid will be tricked?
I know slapping an egr valve on there would do the trick but thats a bit expensive and the opening of vacuum would be a problem.

trying to save money; Ive dumped over 2 grand in my truck so far. It's where I want it to be now; just the engine check light pops on sometimes, and I was told when it throws the code, it changes the spark curve. Just want the computer to quit it. If I could fool the solenoid into thinking the egr is fine, that would work. I was thinking something similar to the egr but of course, not one.

1998 is definately ODB2. Just for reference though, you do have a different ECM/PCM than my 2003. Easiest way to tell is the earlier ECM is black and the later one is aluminum. I believe it has mostly to do with emission controls but if you ever do a PCM/ECM tuner program, there are usually different ones for the different ECM/PCM. I dont remeber the changover year but it was around 2000-2001

I've got a 94 4.3L. What work (besides installing one of the plates) would I need to do to install this mod? Anything with the computer system?
Do '02 and '03 models with 4.3L have EGRs or not???
Someone told me they didn't.
Do '02 and '03 models with 4.3L have EGRs or not???
Someone told me they didn't.
No
Wow! If '02 and '03 model 4.3L engines don't have EGRs, then they must alot more fuel efficient than previous year models, right?
I hope so...

Ok guys so I'm out of inline EGR limiters right now. I'm going to make another batch but before I do I need to have at least 10 sold because it is pointless to make just one at a time. This also helps keep the cost of these little boogers down because we only have to setup 1 time and run 10 instead of setting up 10 individual times.

Shaved, replace the valve first, then do the mod. Or at least get some acetone and clean the valve you have with a good soak (Remember: the pintle end only, not the diaphram!).

Not familiar? Then do a search on this board for a "sticky" done by Jedi Master. That will fill you in on how it works and what it effects when it does work right (And what it effects when it doesn't work right!;) ). As for the soak, just unbolt, set in foil tray filled shallowly with acetone (Available at your local hardware store) so that only the base sits in the liquid to about 3/4 way up the base. Rememeber, you don't want this stuff getting on the diaphram otherwise you will need to get a new one! Let it soak overnight. The next day remove it from the pan & work it back and forth by hand several times by grasping the diaphram with your thumbs on the side with the vacuum nipple and your fingers against the actual diaphram part pushing the diaphram "up" with your fingers then releasing. Then reset the valve back in the acetone as previously instructed to sit for several more hours. Do this repeatedly until the you feel the diaphram/valve move freely up & down then reinstall with a new gasket.
There! That wasn't so hard now was it? If your valve still don't seat fully and causes problems like a code or rough idle, just get a new one and install it as there is probably too hard of carbon built-up on the pintle valve to clean off in any way that would leave the valve reusable.

Come on people step up..heh heh... I just had to pull the intake off my Astro, replacing leaky gaskets "what a PITA" sure would have been nice to have the limiter right now I'm really not looking forward to going back in there, but such is my luck I couldn't wait I was loosing too much coolant out the tailpipe. And what a crap design those factory intake gaskets are once the composite gasket starts to break up at the thermostat port the coolant gets sucked through the gasket along the silicone strip right into the intake port

You seem very knowledgable about egr ellimination. I swaped an 88 blazer 4.3 with a 94 vortec. The 88 motor used a mechanical egr and the 94 uses an electronic. Now you said that you can elliminate the egr with a chip for the computer. HOW?? Where do I get the chip and what do I put in place of the egr. Can you help please??

You'll have to put a block off plate in place of the limiter (Which I can get for you.)... As for a custom tune... There are several out there. Make a thread about custom tuning software and/or custom chips and you should get several different opinions.

I got mine today and installed it! Took about 30 min after figuring out what to take apart and how. (the pressure on the a/c compressor scared me for a while till i just said f-it and pulled it off PSSSS!! )
I noticed a decent increase in accel (but that's just from the butt-dyno maybe). but i know now that my engine's getting cleaner air so that's a good thought. Next i'm gonna do the TB plate mod without fear!!

Got mine installed last week. Unbolted the AC compressor.
Wasn't difficult to do.
It got rid of the "flat spot"/hesitation at about 20-30% throttle.
Oddly that "flat spot" wasn't there if the temps were below ~ 50 deg F or if I had seafoam in the tank.
What can I expect it to to do MPG ?
Thanks !!!

The Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP (http://motoralldata.com/alldata/MOTOR~V31464278~C37357~R0~OD~N/0/77993956/78154671/92727709/92727711/34853741/34857029/34857030/34857526))
The Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor
The EGR pintle position sensorOutput messages are then sent to the EGR system indicating the proper amount of exhaust gas (2) recirculation, with intake air (3), necessary in order to lower the combustion temperatures. This electronic metering of exhaust gas is 10 times faster than the vacuum-operated models as well as an improved diagnostic capabilities.
Positioned at the top of the linear EGR assembly are 5 terminal.

But remember, it does nothing for full throttle as egr has no effect there (no egr operation at full throttle).

so for anyone who has this egr on their s10 was the difference noticeable....is it worth the 35$
