View Full Version : Dash mounted speakers, replacements???
I've searched this forum for concrete information regarding replacing the factory dash mounted 4x6 speakers in my 2000 S-10 and most responses had concerns with tweeter height on co-axial drivers not fitting under the factory grills while others addressed the depth of the drivers (magnets) were factors on what will and won't fit in there. Some folks said that plates would fit sometimes. Ugh!
Even Crutchfiled says that all their 4x6's WILL NOT fit these openings for size constraints.
Anyone had luck with replacing these puppies as full 4x6 units or am I gonna have to forget 'm and just replace them with tweeters only. I would really like to replace them with plates or a good co-axial driver to keep the mids and high's up there where they project well.
Thanks in advance...
Bill.

I put a set of Pioneer 4x6's in my '03. No problem, plenty of room.

According to Cruchfield, they don't fit? Yet they do. Hmmmmm

I ran the Infinity Refrence 4X6s no mods needed and then I switched to the Kappa Plates and there was no mods need for them either. But I have a 96. The plates sound great!!!

Those are plates... They are a 4" with a tweeter in a plate instead of using a 4X6

Thanks to all the great replies from you guys. I just wish Crutchfield would get their S*it together and list these as direct replacements.
I think the plates are gonna be the ones...

well any 4X6 plate or otherwise will fit . with minor modification . take out the speaker cover . break or cut off the platic ring on the underside , also cut down the screw mounts , just cut off the skinnier end . pop in whatever speaker you chose ...put the cover back on , be sure to check for clearance as you do this . trim up any areas if nessicary . put the cover on and crank it up and enjoy your new speakers .

I used a set of Rockford Fosgate FNQ series 4" components. Built a plate out of ABS and used a heatgun to soften my vent ducts so I could push them down some. Then mounted the component set in that location and it sounded about a hundred times better than any 4X6 coax POS you'll find anywhere.
Now that was back in 2000 so the model numbers and stuff are different. Hell I've been out of the game so long I don't even know if they make a 4" component anymore. But that's what i did 6 years ago :D

You were right on the money. All I had to do was cut down the height of the two screw posts on the factory grills with a Dremel wheel. The 5mm spacer plate that came with the drivers was the reason. The magnet depth was never really a problem.
Sounds sooo much better. The highs bounce right off of the windshield and give a real good presence. The Blaupunkt PCxb462's were only $39.99 from Crutchfield and even came with the GM wire harnesses which made hook-up a snap.
Thanks to all...
Bill.
