ok guys new to the cpi stuff and s10s in general.(im a diesel guy). i just installed a new 4.3 in our 95 and it starts seems to run ok but it shakes and has no power and im not sure if the timing is right or what is wrong. i was told at one time to line the mark up on the dampener with the mark on the timing cover so i did this and wouldent run just back fire! so i stuck a straw down cylinder one and rotated it till it was all the way up and tried that and it runs and that is were i am now. could i be off 180?

1st did you unplug the timing wire?
2nd There are two marks on the blancer you need to make sure that you are timing to the right one or the engine will run like crap
Also check to make sure you have the plug wires right, That will cause it to run really crappy(I know from experience)

the wire is near where the passagers feet go pull back the carpet and there will be a large wire harness running to the computer and there will be a wire sticking out unhook that connector

It depends. On trucks with this cap the timing is not adjustable:

On this style cap the timing is adjustable by disconnecing the brown wire: http://198.208.187.182/internet/ViewPartImage.jsp?acdelcoPartNumber=D314A

i have the non adjustable timing but i notice that pic of the cap has #s on it is that the cylinder it goes to? if thats the case then thats my problem cause i put the wires on like you would on a old 350

ok i got it running but it lacks in power could the timing be off by one tooth or would it not run at all?
I can't remember what notch on the harmonic ballancer, i hate how gm put two on there. Whatever is top dead center. I have never been able to get mine to run a whole tooth off.

REMOVE OR DISCONNECT
Make sure the ignition switch is "OFF."
CAUTION : If the distributor is removed from the engine, It can be re-installed using "procedure A" as long as the crankshaft has not rotated from its Initial position. if the intake manifold, cylinder head, crankshaft, camshaft, timing gear or complete engine was removed or replaced, "procedure B" must be followed to correctly install the distributor. A Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) code may also indicate an Incorrectly installed distributor and engine or distributor damage may occur. Procedure B must then be used.
Procedure A
Spark plug (http://motoralldata.com/alldata/MOTOR~V31736744~C37345~R0~OD~N/0/41746505/42420122/93024885/93024887/34853741/34857029/34859584/58828691) and coil leads from the distributor cap (http://motoralldata.com/alldata/MOTOR~V31736744~C37345~R0~OD~N/0/41746505/42420122/93024885/93024887/34853741/34857029/34859584/34872099).
3 wire hail effect switch plug from the base of the distributor.
Two screws holding the cap to the housing
Distributor cap (http://motoralldata.com/alldata/MOTOR~V31736744~C37345~R0~OD~N/0/41746505/42420122/93024885/93024887/34853741/34857029/34859584/34872099).
Use a grease pencil to note the position of the rotor segment in relation to the distributor housing (http://motoralldata.com/alldata/MOTOR~V31736744~C37345~R0~OD~N/0/41746505/42420122/93024885/93024887/34853741/34857029/34859584/56492709). Identify the mark with a 1.
Mounting clamp hold down bolt and slide the clamp back.
Distributor.
As the distributor is being removed from the engine, you will notice the rotor move in a counter-clockwise direction, 42°. This will appear as slightly more than one clock position. Noting the position of the rotor segment, by placing a second mark on the base of the distributor, wilt aid in achieving proper rotor alignment during distributor installation. Be sure to identify the second mark on the base with the number 2.
INSTALL OR CONNECT
If the original distributor is to be replaced, rather than repaired, remove the new distributor cap (http://motoralldata.com/alldata/MOTOR~V31736744~C37345~R0~OD~N/0/41746505/42420122/93024885/93024887/34853741/34857029/34859584/34872099). Using a grease pencil, place two marks on the new distributor housing (http://motoralldata.com/alldata/MOTOR~V31736744~C37345~R0~OD~N/0/41746505/42420122/93024885/93024887/34853741/34857029/34859584/56492709) in the same location as the two marks on the original housing.
When installing the distributor, align the rotor segment with the number 2 mark on the base of the distributor. Guide the distributor into place, making sure the locating slot in the the distributor base fits Over the dowel pin in the intake manifold. As the the distributor is being installed, you will notice the rotor will move in a clockwise direction, 42°. ONCE THE DISTRIBUT0R IS COMPLETELY SEATED, the rotor segment should be aligned with the number 1 mark on the base. If the rotor segment is not aligned with the number 1 mark, the gear teeth of the distributor and camshaft have meshed one or more teeth out of time. To correct this condition, remove the distributor and re-install it following the procedure at step B
Cap and mounting screws. Do not overtighten as the boss may strip.
Distributor mounting clamp and tighten to proper torque. Tighten
Distributor clamp and bolt to 27 Nm (20 lbs. ft.)

If a check engine light is illuminated after installing the distributor and a DTC P1345 is found, the distributor has been installed incorrectly. You now must refer to procedure; B or proper distributor installation.
Procedure B
Bring the engine up to Top Dead Center (TDC) of cylinder number 1. Make sure it is on the compression stroke.

Remove the distributor cap (http://motoralldata.com/alldata/MOTOR~V31736744~C37345~R0~OD~N/0/41746505/42420122/93024885/93024887/34853741/34857029/34859584/34872099) screws and cap to expose the rotor.
Align the pre-drilled indent hole in the distributor driven gear with the arrow cast into the upper portion of the shaft housing. The rotor segment should point to the cap hold down mount nearest the flat side of the housing.
Using a long screw driver, align the oil pump drive shaft in the engine in the mating drive tab in the distributor.
Guide the distributor into place, making sure the locating slot in the distributor base fits over the dowel pin in the intake manifold. -

ONCE The DISTRIBUTOR IS FULLY SEATED, the rotor segment should be aligned with the pointer cast into the distributor base. This pointer will have a "6" cast into it, indicating the distributor is to be used in a 6 cylinder engine. if the rotor segment does not come within a few degrees of the pointer, the gear mesh between the distributor and camshaft may be off a tooth or more. If this is the case, repeat the procedure again to achieve proper alignment.

i am having the same problem as what craigger1981 is discribing but my 2000 s10 i just changed the spark plugs, wires, cap, and rotor. b4 it was running like a champ, now it runs like crap and lacks major power!! does this mean my distributor is damaged????
Are your wires on correctly and pushed all the way down on the plug?
I Need your help with a somewhat similar problem.
September 07 my Son purchased his first vehicle a 1998 Chevy S-10 4.3L 4X2 X engine.
208,000 miles.
fixer upper truck
the previous owner just spent $500 on a new fuel pump @ 207,000 miles
The truck ran Great!! Lots of power, Starts easy, Smooth idle, just needed a little work,
The truck had lots of coolant leaks it was leaving streaks down the road!
The lifters started nocking at start up and now all the time.
Ran a compression test and got 180 PSI low 184 high
OK now for my first rookie mistake.
We pulled the distributor without noting the alinement.
Replaced all the lifters, Took the cam to a machine shop and reinstalled it.
new timeing chain & gears, new water pump, new timeing chain cover,
Put it all back together
Second rookie mistake,
Installed the distributor 180 ° off, it took me finding this web page to figure it out.
Reinstalled the distributor a according to the Procedure B instructions,
Now the truck runs great! Smooth idle, no knocking, great power, BUT!
Very hard to start cold or hot,
I never could get the distributor to point directly at the pointer it was always a couple of degrees before or after it.
Used my old timeing light and the timing mark is on top of the balancer and looks to me like it needs to come down an inch or two while running.
http://198.208.187.182/internet/View...rtNumber=D328A (http://198.208.187.182/internet/ViewPartImage.jsp?acdelcoPartNumber=D328A)
this it the type of cap on the truck.
The distributor hold down looks like you could force it to move if required.
Drove the truck to Advanced Auto last night and used the code scaner, of cource it showed crank posision sensor,
Bank A, problem
Cam posision sensor ( I never saw a sensor around the cam)
I assumed its was from installing the distributor 180 ° off,
Cleared all the codes,
The Service Engine Soon light came back on as I was starting it.
Tonight I will go back and get all the new codes.
Any suggestions would be great.
Thanks in advance…………
Sounds like you forgot to re-connect the camshaft position sensor on the bottom of the distributor.
Is their more than the one on the back side bottom of the distributor?
Thanks.........
Nope, thats the only one.
If it still gives you problems you may have a crank cam correlation issue(perhaps due to the new chain?). A re-learn may need to be done at the dealer.
Annother option for this is to oval out the distributor hold down so you can rotate the distributor a little.
Its Fixed!!!
Went back to Advanced auto and checked the codes it showed the crank position sensor problem.
But I knew it was working when I drove it in the garage to do the repairs.
the counter man @ Adanced told me to check the sensor with a volt/ohm meter.
One wire should have 12v, one is ground, one should have a signal you can see if you put the meter on the AC scale. it was reading about 2.49 Hz.
So the sensor was working.
So I knew it was a timeing issue.
While I was under the truck. I painted the timeing mark on the harmonic ballancer white, started over with the the instructions for Procedure B for installing the distributor.
I turned the engin over by hand and discovered a second timeing mark on the harmonic ballancer, O' Sh!#! After a few choice words. And some trial and error we got the timing mark we painted to lineup perfectly with the distributor.
The Truck started with just a touch of the key.
reset the computer, and the codes have not come back the truck runs great!!
Thanks for all your suggestions!
I would have had to take the truck to the dealer to get this fixed if it wasn't for this web page. Thanks.:D
