Current Colorado/Canyon Engine and Transmission Information

Engines:
The Colorado/Canyons currently are available with the I4 and I5 engines. Both motors are multipoint sequential fuel injection, dual overhead cam (4 valves per cylinder), with a 10:1 compression ratio. The blocks and cylinder heads are cast aluminum. Other features include chain-driven dual balance shafts, variable exhaust valve timing, electronic throttle control and coil-on-plug Ignition.

I4, Vortec 2800, 2.8L
RPO Code LK5
175hp @ 5600rpm
185 lb-ft @ 2800rpm
Firing Order: 1 - 3 - 4 - 2

I5, Vortec 3500, 3.5L
RPO Code L52
220 hp @ 5600rpm
225 lb-ft @ 2800rpm
Firing Order: 1 - 3 - 5 - 4 - 2

Transmissions:

Five-Speed Manual (RPO Code MA5)

The Aisin AR-5 was selected because of its characteristic low-noise levels during operation and the light shift feel and smooth gear engagement properties. It is a conventional two-axis manual gearbox, with a through shaft and a counter shaft. It is cast in aluminum, and weighs 107 pounds, which is 5 pounds heavier than the New Venture Gear 1500 five-speed manual available in the S-series. Triple-cone synchronizers are used on first, second and third gears. These synchronizers have three friction surfaces, which increase their ability to transfer the flow of torque more smoothly from one gear to another. The ratios in the five-speed are widely spaced for versatile performance and efficiency, and are optimized for both engines.

Automatic - Hydra-Matic 4L60-E

The Hydra-Matic 4L60-E is a state of the art transmission for trucks because of its adaptive shift electronic controls and GM’s Electronic Controlled Capacity Clutch (ECCC) technology. The ECCC allows sophisticated variable clutch slip to dampen engine pulses, providing smooth shifting and driveline feel. The transmission also takes directions from vehicle powertrain control module to avoid hunting between gears when climbing hills.

NEW OR CHANGED FEATURES

New torque converter size added for better efficiency - This torque converter replaces the larger 298-mm unit. The smaller diameter contributes to lower inertia forces, and the internal design of the torque converter allows better cooling.
Updated gear processing for improved durability
Redesigned fluid pump seal for quality and easier assembly - Instead of a conventional O-ring installed when the pump is inserted into the front of the transmission housing during assembly, a thicker rubber seal and carrier is installed over the pump housing and then compressed by the bell housing when it is added to the assembly. Greater sealing surface area and easier assembly are the result.
For four-wheel-drive applications on the Canyon and Colorado, the bottom pan of the 4L60-E was modified so that the prop shaft from the transfer case to the front differential will clear the side of the transmission. As a result of the new bottom pan, the 1-2 accumulator housing, the valve body, and the fluid filter had to be redesigned for clearance.

Four Wheel Drive Options:
The Colorado and Canyon use either the New Venture model 233 or 236. The 233 is a part-time conventional transfer case, but engages through an electrically operated solenoid. The 236 can be used full-time, with an electrically operated clutch pack engaging the front wheels when rear-wheel slippage is detected.

Look at the specs. For their size, they are very stout.

I had a colorado for a few weeks as a rental car, the I-5 is a torque monster. It spun the wheels with the greatest of ease... and acceleration was stable through the revs, I was impressed. The whole engine is one giant plastic cover, the only way I could tell it was the I-5 (besides emissions sticker) were the 5 dimples in the exhaust heat sheild,

those colorados get the weirdest wheel hop when they do a one wheel peel...check it out.

My buddy purchased one new in '05. I think its plain inside-kinda nissany. I like some of the outside in looks. His is a 4-door,sport susp,I5 auto. It lacks the punch the 4.3 has even in stock form. He rode in mine and drove it-he was jealous of the amount of go mine had over his. He sais he wish the 4.3 was still availible. I drove his a few times and it was OK. Not impressed. And to think that the dealer I ordered my S10 was trying to get me to wait another year on the arrival of the Colorado. Glad I didnt =)

i was reading about there engines and i was thinking that the 4.2 I6(from the trailblazer, the 3.5 I5, and the 2.8 I4 are similar like the I5 is the I6 minus one cylinder and same for the I4, in comparison with the 4.3 being a 5.7 minus two cylinders, and i was thinking they should fit the same tranny, if that was true you could put a I6 5-speed in a colorado, i think that would be cool. i dont know if this is true just had an idea.

The I-4, I-5, and I-6 are just like you think, all based off the same block. I don't know about the transmission compatabilities though.

Any reason why this baby won't fit the 4.3 engine?
