Does anyone know of a belt that I can throw on to by-pass the smog pump and maybe the AC also? Main the smog pump, broke the brack on it and so now its wedged up again the idle tensioner pulley.

They make an idler pulley to go in place of the a/c compressor. The belt would be one for your vehicle w/o A/C and air pump. Standard listing.

If you put the idler in place of the a/c comp., you simply order the belt for the vehicle w/o a/c and smog pump.

You have to have an idler there so the tensioner can do its job. That's why I took the time to put the diagrams up.

That diagram does not look like it is for a 2.8l truck. The smog pump pulley, alternator, and A/C are in the wrong place.

OOPS!

Thought he had a 4.3, I'll redo it here in a bit.

i should get one to bypass my ac since my compressor os junk and don't use it....would it make a difference performancewise to do this?

less paracitic drag on the motor. I want to bypass my ****, but im fat, so ive gotta keep the ac for these hot kansas summers.

anyone know the length or measurement of what a belt would be if u were to bypass the A.I.R. pump?

I have no idea.

Why don't you use twine and run it along the new belt route? Cut and measure.

From the diagram above, a belt for your truck minus A/C and P/S looks like a good starting point.

I would go to the parts store with my tensioner wrench in hand, explain to the counter guy what I was trying to do, and if he's worth a ****, he'll help you out by letting you try the belts to find the right one.

The tensioner has an arrow on it and 2 "alignment" marks. For proper tension, the arrow should fall in between the marks.

so on a 96 4.3 do i need to replace the compressor pump with an idler style pulley or nothing at all?

your air pump draws as much paracitic drag as an idler would. It only takes about 1/2hp for the air pump
