My truck all of a sudden just started idling funny and then dying while idling. While I try to rev it back up it just sputts and sputteres while gainig RPMs and blows black smoke. I have had this problem 8 months ago and it turned out to be the EGR solenoid?
Now its back and even with the EGR solenoid disconnected from the valve itself, it will still periodically die every once and a while just like 8 months before? What I wanna do to ultimately fix this problem is block off the EGR for good by making a restricter plate. But, even though the engine isnt getting any EGR, will the solenoid itself still send bad signals to the ECM to make it wanna die? Basically will blocking off the EGR fix the problem or even with the EGR blocked will the solenoid still cause the engine to run bad? And Ive read all the debates about EGR blockers and please dont write anything about it being bad? Im not looking for HP Im looking for a cheap lasting fix.

have you checked the PCV? like make sure that it isn't stuck, if it is you can clean it out with some carb cleaner or you can buy one for like 5 bucks

I have an '89 with the 2.8L motor in it. i had the same problem so i fabricated a block for the EGR valve. fixed the problem, and i havent had any other problems as far as bad signals. seems to run very well with no problem. although every once in a while the service engine light will come on with a code that says the EGR valve is messed up. but thats just because there isnt one. hopefully it will solve your problem as well. good luck.

Did you check the Idle Air Controll valve like I recommended?
