View Full Version : What's your 4.3 gas mileage???
I'm curious to know how much everyone else's 4.3 s10/noma drinks. What's your mileage like on a typical commute (interstate and in-town) when not punching the gas at every redlight or hauling tail down the fast lane on the highway (let's say over 70 is hauling it).
I normally get around 70miles plus or minus the first quarter tank and by the time I need to fill up I have aroud 270-280 on the tripodometer. I do both interstate and in-town travel to and from work.
What's everyone else getting?

Well, since I never chimed in on that first thread, we get on average 18-19 mpg with the 4wd Blazer - that is TBI, auto w/ over 200K, lifted turning 30" mud tires. This last tank - 20 mpg. I'm super anxious to see how my 2wd Blazer does!
20-26mpg. The low side in the city, and the high side if i keep the speeds around 55-60mph.
Average for combined highway and city was 18.5mpg, with the occational right foot stretch. Thats when I was driving a couple hundred miles per week. Now Im done with school, so I havnt been traveling as much. Weird I was used to having my take every 4 or 5 days. Now I've been driving for almost 2 weeks and I'm just under half a tank now.
Anyway, best I ever got was about 27mpg (that Im sure of), with granny driving, staying at the speed limits & taking my time. I went 53.6 miles on 1.9x gallon. The pump kicked off 2 or 3 times before it was at 1.9gal. At first it kicked off at 1.7 so go figure. Wasnt all that long ago. Have to take a longer highway trip to get a consistant average.
This is on a '01 5sp 4x4, fully tuned up.

I'm averaging 22 in my Blazer. I spend about 3/4 of my time on the freeway at 60 MPH and the rest around town. The mileage has gone up since buying the dime due to the mods performed. It started out in the upper 19 MPG range.

I drive almost all interstate, at 75 mph, and I usually get around 20. I've got to fill up tomorrow, so I'll check it then. It should be a good all around avg. since I have done every kind of driving possible(granny, city, interstate, and a little light to light drag against my wife in her Malibu, which I completely smoked) so we'll see.

Well, I filled up yesterday. 326 miles on 16 gallons=20.3 miles per gallon. I even had a few wide open trips here and there. I just wish I got 30 mpg like my wife's Malibu.

18.1 mpg for the past year. I live in the rural area. Some bolt ons that may have contributed; K&N FIPK, Husky oil catch can, aftermarket MAF, TB spacer, 75 series tires.... staying away from reservation fuel....I have the EGR mod reamed at a 1/4 now.

I set a new record with the Blazer after re-wiring from the fire. 18.3 mpg. I put it back to stock as much as possible. I get a lot of knock sensor activity now which means I'm pretty much pegged as far as I can go with the timing. No sense maxing the knock retard as that would most likely reduce mpg. That's with 235/60's on the back and 3.73 gears. I think the best I ever got with the 4.10's was 17.5
I sure miss those 4.10's though.........:D

Woah now... ease up lil' buddy. Don't get worked up because someone on the internet doesn't believe what you say. EVERYONE is open to their open. Just because one person calls bull doesn't mean it's a personal stab towards you. They are just acknowledging what you said and letting you know that they don't believe it. You have this same right just as they do.
So when this happens you have 2 choices:
A) Brush it off and don't worry about it because you know the truth.
B) Prove it to that person(s).
If you can't do option 'B' then you have to live with option 'A'. That's life.

Yeh i'm sure the fact that I have a ZR2 with the what, 2-3" factory lift and 31x10.5 tires doesn't help the gas mileage. Though I do have CAI, tonneau cover, and 2.5" single in 2.25" dual out with a delta flow 44 muffler...thought it would at least improve a little bit. Oh well. As somebody on here once said, don't spend a dollar to save a dime... At least all the mods to my truck are mods I wanted regardless of improving gas mileage.

11-01-07, 02:21 AM
Heather, what pressure do you run your tires at? I've been running mine at 42psi. I first ran them at 35psi, but they looked to bulge a little at the bottom. The reason I ask is that I thought I saw a door sticker for a ZR2 that said recommended was 30psi, and that seemed really low.
chevybrat
11-01-07, 02:25 AM

The more you inflate your tires the rougher the ride will be, but it will also be more responsive. Now is it enough to notice a difference on either of those factors? Maybe or maybe not. But it's also supposed to be the firmer the tires, the better the gas mileage. Once again, it's going to vary from one vehicle to another and one tire to another on how much difference it makes.
The bulge on my tires looked kinda unhealthy, and I wasn't the only one to think that. So I pumped them up to 42. I was hoping my gas mileage would improve a little, but I don't really think it did.
Honestly, I don't know that much either. I just try to correctly repeat what I've heard when I tell someone else ;) :D

i keep my tires, bfg a/t, on my 4x4 not zr2 at 32 psi. going on and off road, lowering the psi for off road depending on condition, and they stay perfect. i have 30,000 miles on them figure about 30,000 more. if your tires are bulging check your allignment and try not to turn too sharp, had that problem with my old car.

I only had an alignment about 4k miles ago, so I should be good there. They look better since I've put more air in them. Mine have the max load rated at 50psi cold, so I think 42psi should be fine.

I was getting about 17.5 / 313 or so miles a tank, auto trans. That is about 80% highway with no A/C at all, mostly light footed. I do have fiberglass camper top that transitions to about 5 inches higher that the extended cab, but its very areo-dynamic. I did have a 170 thermostat, but I just changed it back to a 195. (had a hypertech 3 years ago but returned it) I just read earlier in the thread that someone gained another 1mpg that way.
I figured (and hope) that it was making the pcm think the engine was not warmed up yet, and running in a somewhat rich condition all the time, and will lean out and save some gas now! I did have some pulleys on and will put them back on soon. It looks like most eveybody is getting 16-18 mpg which is bad for a 6 cyl. I had a 1995 4.6l V8 Ford crown vic interceptor that blew the doors off my s10 and sot 19-21 mpg with A/C under the same conditions
