View Full Version : California Engine Swap
So with all the laws here (which arent really that bad) what are my options on doing an engine swap? I wanted to put a small block in my 02 Sonoma, but I want to be able to register the vehicle legally. What can I do what cant i do? Thanks again anyone

I think we have a couple Cali people here.I don't have a clue, but if it was me, I'd be asking the guys at the inspection station what they'll pass. And making friends there if possible. ;)
The motor has to be from your year vehicle or newer, which means either an LS series motor or a vortec out of a large van. Has to have FULL obd2 emissions

Yeah, when i was seriously considering this i did loads of investigation into all the Cali people that may be important.
Basically though, you get an engine same year or newer with all of it's smog equipment and you're good to go. The only thing is it can't be from a vehicle in a higher weight class (like a full size work truck/van) and it must be able to pass the sniffer test within the original vehicles allowable limit.

you lost me at sniffer test....so whats the point here basically in cali if you want to run a bigger faster engine you wont be able to register?
