i have a 97 sonoma with a 4.3 i just rebuilt the motor and trans and now it will idle...but when u give it gas it wants to die and blow black smoke....the only thing we did differant when installing is blocked of the egr would that do anything like that???

ya it will because you egr is part of you emissions system and will throw it way out of wack. try hooking it back up and see what it does for you

a bloclked off egr wouldnt do that, a stuck open one would though. Blowing black somke is the first sign of running waaay to rich. Check your O2 sensors, and check to see that you have no fuel leaks anywhere. Was the 97 a cpi motor or did that stop in 95?

Definitely running WAY too rich... The 97 motor is a CSFI motor. Do you get an engine light? I doubt the EGR block would cause that drastic of a condition, but hook it up to eliminate it causing or adding to problems.
