View Full Version : Swap Electric Fan for OE Fan???
Has anyone here tossed their OEM fan and installed an electric fan set-up on a 4.6L S-10 pickup? I think I'm going to do this and save some gas and regain some horse power.
I've got a '96 S-10 and I hate the OEM fan. It drags down the motor when accelerating, and sometimes the fan clutch engages when I'm driving at highway speeds. (Yes, I've installed a new fan clutch...but it still doesn't seem to work right)
I found some fans at:
http://www.stylinconcepts.com/parts.aspx?partfamilyid=964&q=electric%20fans (http://www.stylinconcepts.com/parts.aspx?partfamilyid=964&q=electric%20fans)
Anyone used fans like these?
I'm open to other suppliers, and any suggestions would be appreciated if you know of a better place to get a good fan kit.
4.6l? didnt make em. You mean 4.3? If so there is a write up in the how to section on how to wire up a taurus e fan which in my opinoin is better than amost every e fan on the market
Yep, I meant 4.3L
I'll search and see if I can find the write up about the eFan install.
I found the article, and I really don't care for the fact that the Tarus fan setup draws a bunch of amps.
I've been looking at some after market kits that beat that.
Thanks for the suggestion though.
It does draw a bunch of amps, but, for the price, you cant beat the number of cfm you can get with the taurus fan. Also I believe a nissan maxima fan doesnt draw as many amps, but still has a comparable cfm
I use my truck frequently to run errands for my business so this will be a tax write off for me. I don't care if it costs several hundred dollars.
I just want to take my time to research this so I can get the most CFMs at reasonable amperage.
At this point, I'm more concerned with finding a kit that has everything I need that fits physically.
I guess I need to remove my fan shroud just so I can get accurate measurements of my radiator.

You can find the radiator specs here: TransPro specs (http://webbase.transpro.com/catalog.php?partnum=431405)

I used LS1 fans. Here is my install - LS1 Fan conversion (http://www.fmtc.com/%7Ebrule/fans/fans.html)
Excellent resource. Thanks!
Do you still have the 4.3L V6, or did you swap for a V-8?
Still V-6 and my daily driver.
I doubt I'll go V-8. I am happy where I am with the performance right now, and there is still room for some more power if I decide I need some.
I can get my V-8 fix with a spin around the block in this - HenryJ (http://www.s-10crewcab.com/coppermine/albums/userpics/10006/HenryJ.jpg)
Hotrodder's Garage (http://www.fmtc.com/~brule/)
Wow...that should provide you with a nice fix indeed.
If it's a fast as it looks, I'll bet it's hard to keep decent rubber on the back end of that thing!

You could also get a flex-a-lite #60 fan kit that is for an S-10 so you don't need to rig it to make it work. Everything you need for the install comes in the kit. Jegs.com has them, as well as summitracing.com
I just purchased the following from Jegs.com on Friday:
Dual Electric Fan Kit - Part #400-210
Variable Speed Control Module
2 Manual Override Switches
Before I ordered, I called the Flex-A-Lite tech support line and picked their brain
(since they know their own products better than anyone else)
This is the dual fan kit they recommended.
It's the low profile kit.

Cool, keep us posted on the install progress.
No problem...I can't wait to get it all installed and get rid of that annoying stock fan that's so loud.
Plus, I figure the fuel efficiency will pay for this purchase in a couple of years, if not sooner.
You should notice some throttle response and there are a few other benefits as well. I would not count on a big gain in mileage though. The stock clutch fan really does a pretty good job.
I would never go back, but the clutch fan is not the gas hog that some would make it out to be.
I doubt that the small gain in mileage will be enough ,on it's own, to justify the cost of the electric fans. The return would be a very long term one.
I'd spend the money just to get rid of all that noise.
Besides, my fan clutch engages sometimes at highway speeds, for no reason.
Popped a brand new on, and it does the same thing!
Once I get my electric fan setup installed, I'm going to BURN my OEM fan!
It really is amazing how quiet things are now. You will love it. Those 210's are a great choice. I know of at least one truck running a very potent V-8 that keeps cool with them.
Be sure to share a picture of the install if you can :D

Well, since I do a little web design...I just registered MyS10truck.com
so I can post a few pics, and whatever 'bout the ride. I'll start off with this little project.
I'm probably not going to do anything spectacular, but I do like to work on 'em since I spent about 15 years in the auto repair industry.
My current ride is a '96 with about 165,000 miles on her (runs perfect, too).
But, in the next couple of years, maybe sooner, I'm going to take my time and find me a low milage '03 or '04 model and do some mods on it. I've already got the ZQ8 Wheels for it (brand new set for $520)
Once I get the site up and running, I'll start a links page where anyone with S-10 related webspace can exchange links. I know how to get a site up in the search engines, so this will be beneficial to everyone who wants to exchange links.
I'm about ready to start swappin links if anyone with some webspace is interested.
The site is up at http://www.MyS10truck.com
I'll be takin some pics of my e-fan project.
Actually, I'm doing a complete cooling system make over, as it were.
I'm power flushing the system, installing all new hoses, installing a fail-safe thermostat, and then I'm installing the e-fan setup.
After 165,000+ trouble free miles, I figure my truck is asking "where's the love?"

I'll bet the Flex-A-Lite 210 low profile setup will beat anything ford has built!
This setup only draws 19.5 amps and pulls 2500 cfms

I just can't put any ford products on my Chevrolet...that might offend my truck, and could cause it to leave me in the middle of no where someday as payback!

The 210 has worked well on my truck for over a year now. I have no complaints about it.
Not much for amp draw and works pretty well during the summer months. I think it a little noisier than I'd like, but worth it. Plus it gave me the needed room for the stuporcharger.

Well, it's got to make alot less noise that the OE fan.
So, what brand and model super charger are you using?
That sounds like a profitable mod to make.
Does it make the truck perform alot better?
Gas milage better if you keep your foot out of it?

Actually it was quieter with the clutch fan setup. Less vibrating too. It's minimal, but I still feel it.
Stuporcharger brand is a P-dyne. It was a raging deal on the kit and hard to pass up. I'm about to trade up to the gearcharger headunit within the next 6 months. We'll see what kind of deals are presented. I may just sell the P-dyne kit and go with a Vortech setup. Dunno yet. I may look into a LM4 and use the nitrous and supercharger on that. I haven't decided.
It was a profitable mod for me. The whole kit, brand new, cost me $800. All I had to do was take advantage of somebody elses hardship. I'm sure the guy is still kicking himself for selling it so cheap.
Does it make the truck run better? Yeah, with only 7psi it really pepped the 4.3 up, but then that's not all that's been done to my ride either. :D
Gas mileage sit's around 17.5/18 mpg and around 20/21 highway.
The link below has more details. Except the 18's, and nitrous kit hasn't been updated yet.
The nitrous kit is talked about here tho.

Was the P-dyne supercharger kit made specifically for the 4.3L in an S10 truck?
If so, what model of P-dyne supercharger is it?
I'm just curious if they make an all inclusive kit that includes everything needed to bolt it all on and have it all work right.

Powerdyne has a bolt in kit for the '96.

Easy to install. The directions aren't the most well written things I've seen tho, but easy enough to figure out.
I'd look into Wynjammer as well if your shopping around.

Even easier to install with a fair reputation.
Otherwise Vortech is a good candidate, as well as Procharger.
