cookin batteries

I have a problem, several years ago my trucks alternator caught on fire so I replaced it with one from a scrap truck but I didnt hook up one wire, its red and I dont know where it goes I dont remember much cause its been so long ago its not very thick but someone told me that its the wire that stops charging the battery when it doesnt need charged, they told me that right now everytime my truck is running its cooking the battery full or empty, Ill try and get a pic to show you

Any red wire would go to the charge terminal at the rear of the alternator. The field wire ( "F" terminal) is brown and the lamp terminal is pink w/blk stripe.
