The 400 has a lower 1st gear. It also depends on how much power your talking. If it was me, I would see if you could trade someone for a rebuilt 700R4 so you could have a little O.D.

i think my goal is 1/4 mile time or you could say im looking to having this truck planting my ass in the seat when i wanna go.. we are getting the motor all rebuilt, i dont know to what extent yet since we are talking it over and looking at prices, but it will have alot of bolt ons so if i said 375hp for a lowend rating what would you say?

Performance built 700R4. It can handle that much power, and you could run 3.73 or 4.10 gears and still have some highway driveability. One of the guys I work with has a 700 in his Nova. Vortec headed 355 out of a Vette. In a full on drag car(66 Nova, no interior, slicks, 456's) it went 6.90 in the 1/8. I'd say it's at least in the neighborhood of the power your talking about, probably a little more.

It should be fine. Lots of big block cars came with them. The 400 was an option.

the 400 will soak up more power due to the fact it has heavier internal parts. i would go with a built 700r4. that 3.06 first gear is great for planting you in the seat.

okay well apparently i have a 400 a 350 and earlier today i found out i have a 700R4...now im working on a budget at the moment(im doing this in spare time while also saving for downpayment on a new car) also my family (my dad and his 4 brothers) all used to build chevys like mad before they all had kids and whatnot..i have like 3-5 built up chevy smallblocks that have been laying around for 10-20 years now(probably all crap) but they said the 350 will be stronger than the 700r4 hence why everyone says "use a built 700r4" so maybe ill save and get the 700 built once i got some spare play money...maybe when tax returns roll around again
