ya you can get some heads from a junk yard and have them reworked. that is what i did, spent a pretty penny on them though. but just looking for a good strong 350 pull the numbers off the heads and have them decoded. that is your best bet

Being from Chicago I've found that lookin on ebay & having heads sent to me is cheaper then gettin them from the yard, takin them to a machine shop & then ploppin them on. I'll put it this way, I've found heads on ebay that were aluminum for $450 shipped to my door... NOW, i go to the yard, futz around out there lookin for good castings, spend $50, drive over to the machine shop that does the best work for the smallest price.. & pay them $480 labor.. because I already bought valves ($65) & springs ($35) off ebay.. so those yard heads, which are still a crappy stock cast BTW, now cost me $630 compared to the $450 for an aluminum set.

Junkyard Vortecs are alway a good deal if they are not cracked.Rarely seen them cracked though.Hell you can get a new set from the dealer with springs and all for less 500 bucks.Vortecs are the way to go for a budget build. They flow better than any other head you could find in a junkyard.

I agree, as far as newer castings. If old castings are all you can find, then go for something from '72- down.. but be sure to check if they have accessory bolt holes, camel hump heads didn't have these.

I hate to post this because I cant remember the year only the cause & effect. There was a year of 305 head that had a real tight chamber and when bolted to a 350 it was a good spin for the buck. The down fall was 2 things, heating and a light casting.Might be able to google it.

That would be the 305 HO head. SS Monte Carlo is the best place to get 'em. Carbureted, fits the early style blocks.
