1- I wouldn't, but lots of people do. Should be able to find a re-man for around $200.

2 & 3- Find a tranny shop with a torque converter flushing machine. About one in five have one. Normal charge is $25-50. It can be drilled and tapped for a 1/8 NPT plug but you better know what you're doing when you do that.

4 & 5- Total capacity is 11 qts (assuming you have a 4.3 as you have no year or engine size listed). In a completely dry trans, about half is in the converter.

If you get a dry converter, you'll want to put about 2 quarts in it. Then, add 6 to the pan right before start-up. Upon starting, drop in 2 more qts., run it through the gears, let it warm up and re-check the fluid level. Drive a few miles and re-check again.

Note. The "Do Not Add" hash marks? They mean exactly that. I like mine in the lower part of the hash marks. It allows for fluid expansion w/o the worrys of too much fluid with the resultant foaming if the tranny overheats.

If the trans blew because of overheated fluid I'd think real hard on either adding a cooler or having the existing cooler checked.

You'll get about half of it out.

If that tranny was cooked I wouldn't reuse the converter. The extra cash is worth it if you end up having to pull that ***** back out again. But like Sparky said a lot of people do but most don't recommend it.

Parts stores sell a trans cooler flush in a pressure bottle.
