Ikeep reading about programmers like hypertech or jet and them I keep seeing stuff have your truck reflashed or a custom program set.

So here's my question....Doesn't the hypertechs suppose to do just that?
I mean I want what makes my truck go fast !...If I take it down to the chevy dealer can they reprogram my truck or can I buy a hypertech or jet and do it myself?

I want my tranny to shift harder and my rpm's to rev faster dont' give a damn about gas mileage, I don't like getting out ran by my son's dakota.

Well,

You could get a shift kit & a Corvette servo to shift harder.

Dealers wont do what your looking to do.
You can get the hypertech, jet, etc. & do it yourself. They are expensive though.Mainly what they will do is give you extra timing settings for running higher octane fuel. Can also raise the governer with it.

If you want it to rev. faster you have to make more power. Although the programmers arnt the most cost effective mod for these trucks. Some bolt ons like exhaust, pullies, etc. will give you better gains.

Is your sons dakota have a 4.7L v8? if so you would need significant mods to keep up with the,

no his truck has a 3.9 v-6...it aint stock but no motor mods, elec. fan, air iduction, throttle body spacer and few more goodies.

I understand what your saying but what i really meant was it a waste of money to buy a programmer or should i find a dealer that do a reflash of my computer. I would hate to buy a hypertech and it just be a waste of money. when I could be spending that money on other mods such as exhaust, pulleys or an elec. fan.

Not a dealer but a tuning shop. Thats if you wanted to go that route. Full exhaust and elec. fan, IMO, would be the way to go first.

The computer is the easiest mod to do, as it doesnt require you to get dirty, but to get the full benefits of it wouldnt be realized unless some other mods were done as well. Get the bolt ons first, the underdrive pulleys, egr restrictor, exhaust, etc, then watch your son try and keep up with you.

A custom tune is better than the hypertech/jet in my opinion. Those are a one size fit's all deal. Depending on your plans for the truck will help you decide what to go with.

What makes it go faster? Well, bump the timing, and lean out the pe enrich a tad, and it will be a little faster. The hypertech i can tell you doesn't touch part throttle.

Shifting firmer can be done in the computer, but it is not the best way in my opinion. A shift kit is better. A tune would just bump the pressure a bit, and that can be hard on the seperator plate i think.

A tuning shop.....hmmm...where I live that may be impossible. I live in the middle of no where!

Thanks guys! I going to start with the exhaust and efan and few more little things and then go hunt for a shop that can the tune for me.

You won't notice any performance increase from the tuners unless you run high octane gas. At today's prices you need to factor in that additional expense. There may be an increase running regular, but I haven't been able to feel it. Additional things you get for the price of a tuner is the ability to read trouble codes (and perhaps resolve problems yourself) and reprogram the speedometer for different size wheels or tires (first thing I did with it).

In the end, they are about the same horsepower/dollar as other mods. But I would agree with Tman, do some of the bolt-on mods first to get the full effect from a tuner or re-tune. Especially getting rid of the factory intake.

Thanks for all the advice, I called pcmforless and I have decided to go that route. I'm going to keep stock pcm and replace with one of thiers after I do some mods to my truck. They can program it so I can take the cat off and run true duals plus a lot more goodies. Plus I can reprogram as needed. For $250 you can beat it.
