I have never used an illegal drug (that I know of), and always recommend to my friends and family to avoid them. But I also have to agree with the above statement that "The war on drugs has to stop". We have/are/will continue to loose this war. We can't win, it's a war against our own citizens. There is a want (and some would say a need) for recreational drugs. We have been as successful with drugs as prohibition was against Alcohol. The only thing we've done is make a profitable business for criminals, and increased spending on police/military action (with no good results overall).
This is another case where having it legal and regulated is a much better idea than trying to make it illegal. I have no problem with someone smoking a joint at home or at a friends party to enjoy the night. As long as they don't operate heavy machinery (same rules as for alcohol, bust them for DUI!), have fun.
I would imagine if joints were made legal, you would probably see a decline in harder drug use (even if they were still illegal). Why work so hard to get other drugs when a joint is a quick stop by the local store. It won't stop it completely, but it would reduce it. There are still going to be junkies and addicts, but it will be a much smaller subset that hopefully can be handled a little easier.
The freedom to the pursuit of happiness shouldn't be arbitrarily denied just because someone doesn't like it. The pursuit of happiness is a right (even though actually having happiness is not). If someones pursuit of happiness doesn't impede someone else's pursuit of happiness, I don't have a problem with it. I still don't like drugs, I'm still not going to touch the stuff, I'm still going to tell others I think it's a bad idea to use them, but I'm not going to tell someone they can't, or try to enforce my views on them.
Anyways, tired of this wasted money on the war on drugs. It didn't work, time to formulate a new plan. Stop wasting our police officers time raiding the one person in the neighborhood growing a single plant for personal use when they could be out protecting the streets with a show of presence and stopping murders and armed robbers.
