I've been thinkin' about getting a performance chip for my '96 S-10 pickup with 4.3L electronic automatic trans.
So I thought I'd ask you guys which ones work the best.

So far, I've found these brands:
SuperChips
Hypertech
JET Performance Chips
Predator Performance Module (Dr. Performance)

So far, I'm leaning towards the JET brand as I've been able to find alot of material online about their products.
What would you guys recommend?

I like the Crane Cams controller because it has specific tunes for use with several of their camshafts.

But, I'm only using a stock cam.
Does one of their settings work for stock?

Yes. They also have settings for which octane you want to run, axle ratio, tire size, speed limiters and such.

I'll say this, for the price they get for the tuners vs. having it professionally tuned, I'd go for the professional tune. I haven't seen a scanner that can get rid of torque management and this is where the most gains are to be had on a stock engine. To give an example, I had my GTO dyno tuned. He could only get an additional 5-8 hp out of the engine. But, by removing torque management (along with a couple other items) the car lowered it's ET from a 13.98 to a 13.56. The tune and the addition of a K&N CAI were the only mods.

i have the crane tuner and i love it. definatly better than hypertech or superchips. it says that it "taylors" torque management with the camshaft tunes. i believe it because if i untune it and it shifts it bogs down for a couple of seconds then starts pulling again after the gear change is done. with it tuned it never has a loss of power.

Sounds interesting...where does the Crane Tuner plug in at?
Under the dash behind the glove box?

Into the ODB2 connector. All of 'em plug in there.

Yeah, I was just loking at them over at Jegs: http://www.jegs.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/CategoryDisplay?lang=-1&catalogId=10002&storeId=10001&categoryId=23575

Looks like I'd have to buy the one for my '96, and then buy another one for my new truck when I get it in the next couple of years.

Do you tune it, and then un-plug it?
OR, is it left plugged in at all times?

You tune it, then unplug it. You can then put the stock tune back in and use it on another vehicle. But it'll only tune or de-tune one vehicle at a time.

Looks like the Crane Power Tuner is the best option for reasonable amount of money. When I get one, I'll post results on my site at http://www.MyS10truck.com

I have a '96 model truck now...and the unit be upgraded when I get a newer model truck in the next year, or 2?
