how much power can a 7.625 handle in comparison to an 8.5 out of a V6 5 speed blazer? i know it is less i just want to know the power handling capabilities of both rear axles.

Once you get over 300 RWHP you'll need a T/A rear cover and solid pinion spacer. That'll get you to about 375-400 RWHP. But that's pushing it.

An 8.5, properly prepared, can eclipse 600 fairly easy.

i actually picked up an issue of hi po pontiac or something of the sorts today and it had an article on how to make a 7.625 rear axle handle a lot more power... i found it very interesting...

I've never seen nor heard of axle or housing breakage, just the ring gear teeth shearing off. Happened to me 5-6 times. Just can't get past the physical properties of a tiny-assed ring gear.
