I was at our local hot-rod shop tuning a 302 on the dyno and got to take a peek at the record holding G/FIA Camaro 305. Interesting stuff.

To run stock class, the cam has to be stock lift (like .390-.410). But it ends there. The thing wouldn't idle below 1500 and sounds like something out of the "race-only" cam selection. The heads cannot be touched other than a standard valve job. Steel, non-roller rocker arms. It held 3.5 qts. of 0W-10 synthetic oil in the pan. All the interior is stock except they let you remove the back seat. TPI intake is stock but I noted the "Holley" on the injectors. Stock block and crank also. Overbore is limited to .070 and I'm told they all push it that far. Engine twists in excess of 7000 rpms. Prolly closer to 8000 though I didn't ask.

Anyway, thought I'd share with you guys I saw a "stock" 305 Camaro that runs 11.7's.

For comparison, I raced a 305 Monte Carlo for a little while. 292 Comp cam, Hooker headers, 3000 stall converter, 3.73 gears, 492 double-hump heads.

It ran 13.2's.

Wow that does impress me for a basically stock 305.I wonder what else he has done that nobody knows about it.Because that is damn fast for a TPI 305.

The stock guys are real big on reducing friction and weight, where allowed. The rings are so loose, they smoke pretty good after a few passes. All the clearances are way to the outside of established specs. They'll pore through many sets of stock heads and blocks to find the "right" ones.

Same thing with frictional losses through the drivetrain. The trannys are prolly 30-40 lbs lighter than normal. Same with the driveshaft and rear. The time and money that goes into building a record holding "stocker" is crazy.

The "stock" engine? Somewhere around 20 grand. The guy that built it is Rowe Racing Engines. He also happens to hold the E/FIA record at 11.29. I think that may be a 350 though.

They have a drain cock on the fuel line. A fuel sample is taken after each run and they are also weighed. When he set the record a complete teardown is done at the NHRA tech tent. Each piece is inspected, measured, weighed, etc. They got it back together at 2AM.

I wanna know how long it holds together.

Guys that run stock class will generally do frequent teardowns. A lot of times at the tracks request. At which time they'll freshen them up.

Make no mistake about it. These are definitely not bracket motors that race week in and week out all year long and get torn down in the winter. They are definitely on the ragged edge of everything.

I could see a TPI 305 Camaro doing that with extreme measures taken.the TPI 305 was about if not the best 305 ever produced.

A friend of mine ran a 305 in his 81 cutty it ran low 14's on the motor and 11.6 on a 150 shot in the quarter. If I remember right it went two years before it died, due to a double stacked plate system of 150 shots.Although it did make two passes on it before hypertec piston pices were redistributed.
