Nothing in particular. The 7-1/2, 7-5/8 is the smallest. The 8.2" is old but kinda okay and the 8.5" can be built VERY strong. The most popular at the dragstrip is the 12 bolt though.

Why?

it is a 7.5 or a 7.625 inch. a 12 bolt is an 8.5 inch

the 10 bolt is very stout, and it is on everything.

The 12 bolt is 8.750-8.875".

Not quite a 9" but more advantageous in many ways.

The 8.2" and 8.5"s are still 10 bolts just stronger.

Heh,
My dad's Old 80 GMC Serria had a 16 bolt rearend in it. . . .
It is a **** shame the chassis rotted out. When they came to take it away, they jacked the front end up and it broke in 2 behind the cab.
