Ok so i have to drain all the coolant out of my motor because it needs to be changed and im replacing the heater core. The problem is that i don't have a drain plug on my radiator. I losened up the fitting at the lower drivers side of the radiator and it looks and smells like oil coming out. Im new at this whole mechanic thing but i dont think that there should be oil in the radiator, or is there a transmission cooler in the radiator and that was transmission oil coming out. So how do i drain the coolant, is it the bigger hose the passenger side? I didn't want to do that one because i thought it would make a huge mess.

My truck is a 99 S10 4x4 with 60,000 miles

thanks guys

that wold be from the oil cooler, there is a drain plug on the radatior, i never use them though when doing a complet flush, go buy a flush kit, they come with a t-fitting that you put in your heater hose line and a tube that you stick where the raditor cap goes this allows you to hook up a hose and power flush the system out, this helps get the cooling system way cleaner than just a drain and refill

I usualy just pull the lower rad hose to drain the coolant.

Pull the lower hose. On the drivers side of the rad, there is a fitting for the oil cooler, pass. side is a trans cooler line. Dont mess with those, from experience, they are a ***** to get re-sealed. I had a 99 S10 come back 3 times at the shop because one of my guys couldnt get it tight enough, even with tef. tape, to prevent it from leaking.

Haven't had a problem with mine leaking after putting them back on mine or my sisters. Can't remember if there are orings on the newer ones with the clip style

im talking about the fittings that the clipped ends fit into. they thread into the rad. If all he did was pull the e clip, then he should be fine.

what about the two plugs for the water jackets in the block. The ones located beneath the exhaust manifolds that the haynes manual says you HAVE to take out to drain the coolant system?

I want to flush my system out, but its rainin out here and i was gonna wait till it was drier to pull the plugs, but if i dont have too, that would be great.

And howmuch does an actual power flush kit cost? i was gonna just do the drain, and refill.

I wouldn't mess with the block drains.

hahaha,j/k. i was wondering, if i do drain the coolant out through the radiator, and i flush it, how do i get the flush out of the block itself, or should i just flush it, drain it again, and than put the new coolant in? Unless im barkin up the wrong tree entirely.
