I have an 1986 s-10 with the 2.5 has been fairly well taken care no big problems til yesterday on the way to work was rollin about 70 down the highway and looked in the rear veiw and had a smoke screen going ..I said screw and kept rollin and it just cleared up never missed a beat .. pulled in to work and opened the hood nothing blew all over the hood or anywhere till i pulled off the air cleaner it was full of oil ..... truck has 198,000 on it oil changed every 5,000 miles cannot figure it out ...could it be the pcv valve ?
had a 350 in an s-10 one time with old old Mickey Thampson valve covers do this cause the had no pcv valve baffle in them ... caould my valve have gone bad? heck i drove 30 miles back home after this and had no problem but she was low on oil...Any Ideas?

Could check out around the EGR valve. I think I heard that sometimes oil pools up around it & it's got cheap gasket so it could bleed in. PCV valve could do the same thing. By the way.. welcome to the Planet

EGR dumps into the manifold....I think your PCV valve is stuck open.

what color was the smoke? white or blue? white would be burning anti-freeze, blue would be burning oil.

I was going to ask the same question as Nomaboy. Another option is black. Maybe you were just blowing carbon out of the exhaust. White could also indicate steam or a water leak; Ruptured hose, water pump or some such thing. There should have been evidence of that after stopping however.

well here is what i know as of now pcv is new the smoke is white and i have oil going in to the breather thru the top like the valve cover is filling up with oil when it occurs it boils out the white smoke has done it 3 times in 3 days .but i have drove it 60 miles everyday since it first happened .. it'll do it every trip and stop and use about 1 quart everytime.. is the head stopped up or is somthing else clogged .. I gather that the hose off the valve cover (closest to the firewall) is like a crake case breather to my best guess and runs to the breather and that is where the large pool of oil in the brather is coming from ..
sorry guys all i know as of now vacation starts today so we are gonna eat and
start trying to find out what i have done .. happy thanksgiving and thanks for the help.....

You're using a quart of oil every 60 miles... that can't be good. Has the water level changed during this time? Try a compression test. I'm thinkin' head gasget now. That would allow water and oil into a cylinder or two. Your water level will usually drop some in that case and will foam your oil. The spark plug in that cylinder is going to look prety ugly too.

Probably collapsed a piston and stuck the oil ring. But jeez, that 2.5 is sooo easy to repair even in-frame. A little diagnosis and effort will pay off in the long run. Pull the plugs and see which one is oil saturated for starters.
