Get a front end service kit, has all different sizes of forks and stuff.

There shouldn't be anything hitting the axle. Get the pickle fork mentioned above. The longer the ball joints have been installed, the harder they are to separate. You shouldn't need much more than a floor jack to support the spring while you separate the ball joint. The factory ones are riveted in and that rivet will need to be drilled out or the head ground off. You don't say what year you are working on. I believe that older model S10s will have a bolt-in replacement while newer trucks and Blazers will have press-in ball joints. That will necessitate the removal of the lower control arm. You'll have to take them to a machine shop if you don't have a hydraulic press.

On my '92 the uppers will need to be drilled out and the replacements will have bolts to install. I believe the lowers are pressed in.
