My 1987 S-10 I bought for only $700.00 seems to have a 2.8 V6 from a Jeep in it but I am not sure what I have. Definitely a 2.8 with TBI but a water pump from the parts store for an 87 will not fit and the one from a Jeep 2.8 will. The drive pulley for the water pump has been modified so a serpentine belt will work. Looks as if the alternator bracket was modified also. I really need to post some pics.

I took the time gear cover off because I need to change it to a Chevy vice Jeep water pump will work. Now I have a picture of a Chevy timing cover and at the bottom below the crankshaft seal it is straight and mine slants forward with two bolts from the oil pan going into the timing cover.

Anyone know the interchangablity of all this? I thought a 2.8 was a 2.8 and now I am finding out differently.

Jeep definitely used the GM 2.8 though I never saw one installed in a S series. Whoever did it must have really been desperate for a 2.8 as Jeep hasn't used them in ages.

I also found out that earlier 2.8's that have carb's had the slanted timing cover also. So it is possible to put a TBI onto a formerly carbed engine? Slacker, could you post a picture of you pulley/belt setup and what your alt. braket looks like?
