View Full Version : LOTS of smoke after a seafoam treatment.
I have seafoamed my truck before and knew there would be smoke. When I did it, there wasn't much and it only lasted a few minutes, MAYBE 5 minutes tops.
I just seafoamed it about 15-20 min ago..... and it's still smoking. It's a lot more than it has been before in the past and it's more or less a cloud hanging over the cul-de-sac. How long does the smoking last for those of you who have used it recently???
Well, it finally stopped smoking after 30min. Must have been REALLY gunked up in there.

Yup. Lots of smoke means you did a good job.
Shoot when I sea-foamed mine, I had smoke for a good 30 minutes and thought I'd be linched by the entire town from how much smoke came out. I even drove it around the neighborhood hoping that would keep the smoke thinner and less noticable. Yeah, not so much, looked like a bank of fog had rolled down the street. Luckily it was pretty early in the morning.
Anyways, yes as you found out it can put out a LOT of smoke.

a little off topic, and a dumb question, but how do you seafoam your engine?

I pull off a vacuum line then let it suck it up out of the can. The one on the brake booster is a good one to use.

I found this somewhere....
Here we go. You wanna do this with the engine warm. You can pour this stuff in several places, The PVC vaccum hose and the intake going from the brake booster hose both work. I put mine in on the hose that connects to the brake booster. It is located on the drivers side of the engine. It's the Round piece with the hose going into it with a rubber grommet surrounding it let it suck up the seafoam. When you do this you'll hear the vaccum sucking air in, and your rpms should jump a tad.
The can recommends using about 1/3 to get sucked into the intake, 1/3 in the crankcase and 1/3 in the gas tank.
Now you want to put this stuff in on a warm engine. Keep it running, and take off the booster line, or pcv line. You want to put about 1/3 - 1/2 of the can into the hose. Let it suck it up. Dont force it in. I just stuck the hose pretty close to the Seafoam, It managed to suck it up on its own.
If you have someone with you it helps. As they can help keep the revs up for you. Dont rev too high. Just about 1500 or so and let it suck it up on its own. Some people will tell you to stall the engine with it. But as soon as it sucked all of it up, I just cut the engine on my own.
At this time I went ahead and poured the other half of the bottle down the crankcase. Let it sit for about an hour. It'll start to work on the insides and help chew all that buildup that might be clogging your engine.
After your hour is done. Go ahead and start it up. From what a lotta ppl say it'll start smoking like MAD! But I didnt really see that. Mine was just a little bit of white smoke.
At this point. Go ahead and take it for a quick spin. NOT MASHING it. Just take it easy and dont get too high on the revs. It'll take about 5 miles or so to get the smoke done with.
Once you've got that. Change your oil 500 miles later. The container says that Seafoam is safe to use every 2,000-5,000 miles. But I really dont see a reason to do it every oil change. Twice a year is a little more feasible.
I did this earlier today, and i notice a difference already. Its a little smoother at idle, and just feels like a little bit of lag has been taken out of the slight hesitation.
I also put 1/2 of another can in my gas tank to help clean out the fuel lines a little. It is also advised to use it to clean your EGR with it, as that is the most common place that gets clogged with carbon that would need to be cleaned.

Ya, it was a good 30min of smoking. I did drive it around. It looked like I was fogging for mosquitos. I made my wife extremely embarassed. I made her ride with me under the guise of "running" to the store. She looked back at asked
"What the hell is wrong with your truck!?"
I just started laughing and told her what I did. I was laying a thick cloud out behind me. I thought it was hilarious, while she tried to sink as low as she could into her seat.
