fuel gauge problem

I have a 1997 s10 ss 4.3. my fuel gauge stopped working couple years back,i have replaced the fuel pump sending unit three times (doesn't work) i have replaced a chip under the dash behind the glove box ($110) for it Didn't work.
when i fill up the gauge reads a 1/4 tank and then goes to empty after a while.

my 2000 blazer does the same thing. and its all stock. it just reads full all the time and then when i get to around 1/2 a tank when you sit still it drops to empty and the low fuel light comes on? hit the gas and start going and it reads full again. then when the truck is empty the gauge drops to empty and stays there till you run out of gas or fuel up. and when it goes down and stays down YOU BETTER FUEL UP!!!!! i just use my trip meter for a reference. but i would like to fix it with out buying $500 in parts that dont need to be changed.
