View Full Version : WynnJammer and Towing ??
I'm told this is the forum for good Jammer Info ..... I'm considering a Jammer for my 01 Silverado Short Box 4.3 ......... ONLY for enhanced towing cababilities , anyone here towed alot with a Wynjammer installed .....just curious about continous boost / detonation under load like when passing or going up hill etcetc I'm familar with Supercharged engines for performance and understand the PCM tuning issues on boosted motors etc only reason I looking at an SC is for the 2-3 times a year I need to tow my musclecar 1200-1600 miles to meets ...... truck has basic mods nowand actually tows quite well for what it is .not looking for huge gains 50-60 hp will be fine just dont want to add SC and create heat / detonation issues when towing that will crate problems .......have no doubts about the Jammmer product and performance when not towing ..just would like to know someone has some experience towing 4500lb ....... also assume if had a proglem on a road trip just disconnect belt and truck would run like normal with no boost
TIA

It'll all be in the programming. Towing with a super isn't an issue like with a turbo.
Well, I haven't had the chance to tow anything significant with my WynJammer installed yet. Most I towed was maybe 700-900 lbs worth of trailer for some bulky furniture intown. There were certainly no problems with that, but an unboosted truck would have had no problem with that either.
Detonation should not be a problem if you install colder plugs. For further assurance you might look into something like an MSD 6BTM which allows you to pull back a little timing at higher boost (extra precaution against detonation and easily adjustable to how much timing is pulled out, from none-to-lots). I would first just change out the plugs and do some hard runs at high rpm to see if you hear any pinging, if you do then maybe you should get the MSD box.
I'm currently running some stock platinum plugs (haven't gotten around to swaping out the colder iridium plugs I have) and get some ping at top RPM, so I fixed that with my MSD 6BTM. With just a little bit of boost triggered retard, I have no ping. What I really need to do is get those plugs in (which most likely will stop the little bit of detonation I get), but just been real busy.
As for problems with the blower, yeah, just disconnect the belt (not really an easy task, takes a little time to change belts) and it will act like normal for the most part. My belt actually broke (after over a years worth of use) and I didn't notice it till I was driving one day with the windows down and finally realized the whistle noise from the charger was missing! I hadn't been doing any heavy runs, and the extra drag from the non-running blower didn't seem to take much zest out of the normal day to day drive. Anyways, yeah, it drove fine with out the belt on the charger. I do keep a spare serpentine and blower belt in the truck though, just in case.
Thanks for the reply ....yes colder plugs etc will help I have a Eaton M90 supercharger on my GTP and its modified alot so I understand what to do to get rid of knock .although really the the thing to do is tune the motor so you dont have to retard timing under boost ...... retarding timing will reduce some power .....Plugs my experience is copper plugs reduce detonation alot better than iridium or platinum .... now this is at 12 lb boost or better so maybe Iriduim 's are Ok for low boost ....but for 5lbs boost I'd go one heat range colder in a copper plug Autolites are real good (I ve tried them all in my GTP)may not last as long as Iriduim but work alot better at fighting detonation
My big concern about heavy towing is heat and detonation then knock retard that kills timing so much you dont get all your boosted power especially in prolonged uphill pulls or running into headwind .....others who pull heavy loads with other type of SC's always seem to need an intercooler to really make it effective ........just wondering if the Jammer runs cool enough under towing conditions at low boost to not need a intercooler
I expect good pcm tuning will be able to handle all the fuel and timing issues so no need for boost retard ignition you can do that in the pcm
