92,000 on my 97 work truck and (knock on wood) no problems. 8,200 on my 02. Car Craft had these engines listed in the Top Ten Worst Engines Ever article a few months back. They cited low horsepower, bad headgaskets, and freeze plugs that rot out. I do love the simplicity of them though.

My '95 was a 2.2L 5-speed -- put 135K miles on it in 4 years. NO problems at all -- was kept well-maintained, even though I did thrash the daylights out of the poor thing!

I'v got a 2.0ltr chevette sitting behind the garage. It ran great when parked it and I know the odometer has fliped at least once. I really doubt that an 81 chevette only has 22k on it but I don't know if it's the original engine. It parts though so i can fix up the other chevette with the 460 in it.Hopfully i get the traction problem fixed this time...

Only 70? Shoot, I wound my auto-equiped '85 to 118 across the top of Indiana one night. And it lived.

I have 234,000 kilometers (145000miles) on my 95 2.2L

Okay, I guess it's my turn...

My '94: 165,000mi, before a lifter contamination by fragments that oiling system delivered, after an idiot mechanic that replaced the factory chain (After it failed around 125,000mi, and before I got the truck) failed to fish the broken pieces of the old chain outta the pan, caused the lifters to collapse. 35,000mi on new engine before the cheapo chain the rebuilder put in failed (Damn bastards. $3000 total for this?), which I replaced with a GM set.

MY '99 'Noma: 113,000mi, then it's chain failed. Forced me to fix the '94.

Could someone please explain to me how some folk who have the LN2 are able the go well in excess of 100,000mi without a chain failure? It's driving me up a wall!

193,000 on my 2.5L. actually, I replaced the factory AC Delco fuel filter about 6 months ago hoping to get better gas mileage and it made it worse. That one though was like a rusty fuel death trap, I dont see how it was running with what was coming out of it. It runs like a champ though.

but my throwout bearing sounds like a bird chirping.

Nickelin'Dimer

Since it was a TBI system I'd guess that the old, clogged filter was restricting pressure, causing a lean condition. And I've seen worse with air filters (Like my dad's '89 G-van, factory paper piece 'til about 100,000mi).

And that throwout bearing sounds like it's sayin' "Replace me, I'm due".

94 S-10 2.2 with 130,000. I'm the 2nd owner. I rebuilt the engine while i was goin to school as a project, nothin was wrong with it. Runs like champ, doesnt leak, and it gets pretty good gas mileage.

204,xxx on my '94... But silt built-up on the inside of the frame channel, and now there's two 1'-long slots rusted through it down along the bottom of the vertical wall, just before the front leaf mount.

Cooling-system maintenance is rather critical on the LN2... Popular Hot-Rodding actually listed it one of the "15 Worst Engines Ever Built (What Were They Thinking!?)" a few years back, due to the core plugs rusting-out. (Due to lack of proper coolant changes, I'd imagine.) Other than that, the only other complaint they had was "Lack of power". (Yeah... Like I haven't heard that one about 4-cyl trucks before!)

Otherwise, this is a good engine... Just so long as it's well maintained. (Like a Small-Block Chevy!)
