I have 1996 oldsmobile bravada, I just found out that my Front drive shaft and tranfere case is giving out and it needs to be replaced. The problem is, that I cannot afford to buy a new set, or go to a local GM dealer to buy one due to the $3,000 cost. I'm having a hard time finding a used auto parts dealer that has any of the parts I need. Can anyone tell me of a good place to get some parts used?

I can only tell you locally, but
http://www.wilbertsgmparts.com/press.htm

Ontario trucks parts will have it also and there part of what they call trade a part which alow of recycle parts dealers belong to.

You also have ebaymotors.com

Half shafts rebuilt run $150, used arounrd 75, transfer case??

$600 for the transfer case at Wilberts

Looks like $50 for a half shaft!

The transfer case is EASILY repaired. 'bout the only thing goes bad in them is the torque unit.

I'm curious about BOTH being bad at the same time. Kinda' sounds like a shotgun approach to solving your prob.

What EXACTLY is it doing? Please, be descriptive.

At first I heard this noise, i thought i might have been the roaters needed turned but it sounded kind of like a card on a bycle spoke but deeper. Along with that there was a terrible viabration, and I thought that might have been the exhaust pipe rubbing against the frame. So I took it back the mechanic, he drove it from the parking lot to the garage, and put it on a lift. When he did that he had someone put it in gear and he looked at the transfer case and said there was my problem. It was making some awful noise that sounded like a train, chugging along the way. He had me put my hand on it and with each clang I could feel it with in the transfere case. Along with the the front drive shaft was wobling. Then he put it back into park and wiggled the front drive shaft back and forth and up and down. It had some play in it, then he check the Oil inside of the transfere case and let some poor into his hand and it had a metal flack texture and look to it. Kind of like Glitter mixed with red cool aid.
what do you think?

Front output shaft bearing is gone, or it could be the casing wore out enough that the bearing itself within the vore is moving. That being the case you cant fix it, but a bad shaft and bearing doesnt require a new transfer case, just that they probably dont know how to disassemble one to fix it and its the easier way out for them!

I guess that would explain the bad vibration. I'm probly going to take it to the transmission shop tomarrow.

I took it to the transmission shop, they said it is the front drive shaft causing the majority of my problems, so I bought a used one for $200.00 and as soon as they get it I will know more.

Well they put the new front drive shaft in and that fixed the very bad vibration. The technition said i had compound problems, he kept talking about the fron rear end haveing problems, I assume that he means the fron differetial. But the couldn't distinguish the ticking noise from the transfere casing assembly, or the "front Rear end". So I had them pull the "front rear end" off and they are going to let me know if that is my problem sometime this week.

Well I was driving down the interstate the other day and I kicked it up to 80 MPh and all of the sudden it made a little bit loder than usual nioce and the it stopped and ran smooth it came back for a few minutes the other day but now its gone its running nice and smooth and no noices. It kind of freaked me out, my friend said it might be the axle slipping in and out in the front??????

Instead of buying a new front transaxel see if you can rebuild it. you'll save allot doing it yourself if it's a sevicable part.
