My passenger side front speaker is crapping out. Popping and clicking the whole time it's on. Pulled it out and checked the connections, put some dielectric grease on the contacts, and checked for damage. Looks fine, but it's still not working. I just left it unhooked until I can get it sorted out.

Anyone have suggestions for why it's acting up, or is it time to just replace it?

On the same note, does anyone have a good spare 1st gen speaker?

Never mind. Another hour of poking around, pulling out the head unit twice, and some more dielectric grease got it working right (for the moment). We'll see if it lasts. The right front speaker still turns on after the others, though. When you power the radio, you'll hear sound in the left channel, then after a second or two the right channel will turn on.

coil is starting to open, and is arching some in the speaker, don't worry, you can't be hurt by it, anyway, go to best buy, we have factory replacments, and better, for cheaper than a factory speaker, believe me.

I'm not sure it's related to the coil...since it was doing it with the engine off. ONE OF THESE DAYS I plan to replace all the junk speakers, but I know once I start on one part, it'll just lead to a new head, an amp, etc etc...$$$ :D

wrong coil. there is a coil in the speaker, not your ignition coil. I agree though. for the same price of the old speaker you could get new ones for the same does, and they will sound lots better

Ohh, I see. I don't know a thing about audio, so I'm learning as I go. It hasn't been popping today since I adjusted the contacts at the head and speaker and put the grease on them. So, what companies make direct-replacement speakers? I remember all the fun I had installing stereos in my old 86 F150 and 75 Beetle...not really in a hurry to get into that again!

(the dash) The speakers that are stock in your truck up front will be 4x6" speakers, and they are a cinch to replace. you are gonna need a set of allen (or torx?) keys, a pair of wire cutters/strippers/crimpers, and a few (4) female spade connectors. Remove the 2 screws in the front, the back will just slide out when the speakers are removed unplug the connectors, and cut strip and place the female connectors on (simple enough) then replace the factory speakers (if my memory serves me right, they have a cheep plastic nut that just screws down on there. it can be removed by hand) connect the speaker back up and screw it back down. depending on depth issues, you may have to modify the stock speaker grill (the piece that is flush with the dash) by cutting the tabs at the back off. i had to do this, and i havent had any problems. there are probably ways around this, but i didnt want to fight it. it is a really simple mod, and it will give you a great improvement in sound. just ask if you have any other problems, or if you want me to pm you with my ph # so you can call if you have any problems in the process

I've pulled both the front speakers and head out a few times already, so I know the drill by now :D

That's a hell of an offer, BVR! PM sent! I would have got back on this earlier, but I've been in the garage all day (see thread in drivetrain section).

(thought I posted this...) So what size are the rear speakers in a Blazer? I haven't tried pulling them out yet, but I'm going to want to replace the rears to keep up with new fronts!

you probably wont need the rears to be replaced. if you replace the front, that is where most of your sound is coming from anyway. if you do want to though, they are probably 6 1/2, that is what crutchfield is showing, but if you want, i can look when i get to work on monday morning
