Is it normal to roll backwards when the trans is in (D) and stopped on an incline? I just had my trans rebuilt and am arguing with the shop. I don't remember the truck doing this before.

Exactly.. & how much is it rolling backwards?

I am going to guess on the angles. 1-2 degrees it holds at idle, 3-4 degrees it rolls backwards with a slight pulsing/vibration, anything above that it rolls like it is in neutral. It will continue to roll until I apply the brake or the gas. I was in the process of moving from NJ to TX when the Trans went out so I can't compare it before/after on the same incline. I never had this problem before and had some pretty steep intersections in my old neighborhood.

with that little of an angle it shouldnt roll backward

maby they put in a different stall converter that allows that to happen, but that is way to little of a angle to do that

They say it is the factory spec stall converter and it seems to be. I thought there was something internal within the trans that prevented the vehicle from rolling back while in a forward gear to prevent accidents. Also seems like it could damage the trans if you were rolling back and hit the gas to go forward. I know that you don't want to use the engine to hold on a hill, because the trans will overheat eventually.

Do you feel any slipage in regular driving? It sounds to me like worn steels & clutches.

There isn't a "hill hold" feature on that transmission. It will roll backwards if the hill is steep enough. You might be underestimating the hills that you are on. You probably couldn't even see a one or two degree slope with the naked eye. The weight of the truck will have some effect also such as when you are carrying a load or a full tank of gas. But... if its not the same as before you had it worked on, they must have done something different. I wonder if there was some drag in the bad transmission that they "freed" up with the rebuild?

No slipage when driving, driving wise everything seems ok.
20X--You are probably right on my guestimation of the angles. The shops explaination was that it was probably a problem with the old trans and now the new is operating properly. It would seem that if the trans does not have a "hill-hold" feature then this is not a problem, as long as the trans is shifting properly when driving.

usually depends on angle steepness, pump pressure, and stall on converter as well as idle setting.
