View Full Version : gas gauge going crazy.
My wife has a 2000 blazer 4.3L, and the gas gauge moves all over the place when sitting at an idle. Anybody have any ideas what it could be?.
Thanks Matt

I have to agree . Your problem could be anything from the float to the actual wire for the gauge itself in the cluster harness.
sounds like either the float is loose, or my opinion, you have a loose connection or a short somewhere. The conditions are right at idle that it wiggles or shorts the wire causing the gas gauge to "go all over the place"

s-series have chronic gas guage problems, could be anything to tell you the truth, best bet is to take it to a dealer or a good shop and have them take a look at it (dealer if its still under warrantyeven tho its a 2K)

matt, tell you what happen to me. down here in tampa,fl they had a problem with some gas stations that had bad gas. it had too much sulfur in it. the sulfur causes a film on the float contacts and doesn't allow contact between the 2 parts(jedi master can probably tell you what i mean) i just can't think of it right now. but any way i always buy my gas at mobil and at the same mobil station, right by my house. i have a speed pass so it makes it convient. plus with another vehicle i had, twice i got water in my tank from getting gas every where and any where. thats why i buy from 1 place or atleast try to. any way back to the subject. one day i wasn't near a mobil and was headed to another county so i decided to fill up at an amoco. i went 110 miles and the needle didn't move even when in P or N. after it started to move it went crazy bouncing all over the place like i was off roading over rough terrain. now i just thought about something the needle only moves when in park or neutral unless you have drove along ways with out going into P or N. my needle didn't move untill i went into P or N and then it was all over the place. after a couple of tank fulls of mobil fuel it stopped doing that. i think got some of that bad gas.
