View Full Version : bad intake rtv/gasket?
It "looked" wet like that since I got it. But now I could kinda see where the dexcool had dripped out. Is this leaking in the intake as well? inside the lifter valley? why would it be coming out there?
Is this bad enough to worry about...aka should I take care of it now to avoid problems later?

forgot to mention, there has been no significant coolant loss.
Intake gasket is covered under this third party warranty I have.

I would take care of it soon 'cause it's only going to get worse and dexcool dosen't like oxygen that much.

Yup. The infamous plastic/rubber intake gasket.
You'll get the "new/improved" version when you replace it.

sure its coolant and not oil? BTW...get rod of the dex-crap and put reg prestone green in there
Yep, definitely Dexcool. Cant see it in the pics but down in the shade there you could see the more "pronounced" orange of dexcool.
Need help quick though. I think im gonna get a 180* thermostat to put in while all the **** is being done.
Without taking cost into account what would you guys get, A JET or Hypertech thermostat?
the hypertech is actually more but it appears to have a little bit better construction compared to the Jet one. Besides I've heard from some people that ..."JET SUCKS" ...exact quote...

Forget the "high-tech" t-stats John. Go to NAPA and get a Super-Stat. Best on the market.
napa is one of the first places I checked but they only have 195s, was looking for a 180*. (harder the find for the newer trucks)
I checked
-autozone
-parts america (advanced auto)
-Napa
-Rockauto
-summit
Only summit has 180* thermostats for the newer trucks. others all have 195s, except for parts america, they have a 170* thermostat but I didnt wanna push it that much.
only 2 choices for the 180 that I found are JET & hypertech& I have to order it from summit. I wish I could get the damn thing locally.
Jet:

Hypertech:

http://www.stant.com/brochure.cfm?brochure=205&location_id=168
if you search their site, it doesnt look like they make a 180* superstat

thats all it lists

I got a JET a few years back because I was having trouble finding a 180* anywhere. I used to work parts at a place and Im sure I couldve cross-referenced it. But most auto-parts store employees only know what the computer spits out and/or s a dick about you checking on it yourself. I didnt have a forum to refer to at that time, JET worked fine

Makes me wonder who is making them for JET, Hypertech and Summit.
Erie resemblance?

Superstat (from Napa.com)

so just go with Jet then?
Id like to order it asap lol
After looking & calling all morning, I just said **** it & went with the jet 180. Im taking it to have the gaskets replace on Wed. Needed to order it from summit early today so I might have it in time. Thats If fedex doesn't screw up the shipment.
hey on the newer thermostats you dont need a gasket right? Dont need the separate gasket like the the older ones ? Its already slipped on the outer edge like the top pic, correct? just wanted to double check

reuse the old one...should be easy to come off and on.
wtf..got em replaced. I get the truck back & now its takes a bunch of cranking to start up turns over about 6 times. & the ****ing alt is whining really bad wtf? lol
I try not to be a picky ***** about things but....
could the fuel lines of been pinched or something where it goes under by the firewall. I cant even ****in see over there, even from underneath. I could turn on the ignition & wait a second & it will turn over like 6 times b4 it starts. But If start it right away it doesn't seem to do that.
Anyone know why the alt would start whining all of sudden? bearings?
its fukin loud.
what a nightmare. stay away Im bad luck.
any thoughts? it seems to have the reverse symptoms of a fuel pressure problem. Is it possible for to much fuel pressure making it hard to start? Ex. have enough when you turn it on right away, but if you let it pressurize, it have to much that it wont fire right away?
also when I feather the gas really lightly I seem to be getting a buzzing sound from the firewall near the distributer area? but as soon as I let off the throttle, or press it slightly more it stops.
& for some odd reason when i startd my truck up & came home from work today the alt wasn't whining... although it was in the morning? wtf is going on lol?

Take it back to Bubba and Junior so they can fix whatever it is they f'ed up

NO!!! if you love your truck, you wont take it to them
little update.
I hooked up a fuel pressure gauge.
When you first turn on the key its around 64psi while the pump is priming. After its priming it goes back down to about 54-55psi. It doesn't drop off or anything while cranking, its right in that range. Pressure is around 64psi reving it to 4k rpms. Although I couldnt get it to crank the 6-7 times while I was testing it. only a few.
I guess im looking at an ignition prob?
I doubled checked all connections on the coil & distributer. found nothing.

Take it back to who ever did the intake gasket, they probably f***ed something up when they had it out and why should you pay out of pocket (or take your time) to fix their mistake. Funny how it ran fine with a small coolant leak but now it's being a PITA after going to the shop.
I plan on doing that, but I'd rather fix it myself if its something stupid rather than having someone else do it.
it runs fine it just starts weird.
heh, theyll prob tell me they cant find what it is anyway.
