How do you permanently remove the ABS (gen 2.. '98-up) w/out throwing codes?

Now why would you want to go and do something like that? They have a stand alone computer don't they? I would think you pull that with the ABS thing-a-majig. If you do let me know what you want for the parts.

ABS is controlled by the EBCM (electronic brake control module). Location...IDK but I think under the passenger seat. There is a 60A fuse for the hi-current operation of the ABS motor under the hood at the dist/fuse/relay center. There is also a 10A fuse in the inside fuse panel that goes to power the EBCM. At the EBCM there is 12V ignition(brown), ground(black), fluid level sensor input(purple)and TCC/brake swithc/cruise signal(also purple apparently). communication or ABS light is sent out through the serial data class2 wire(lt.blue) to the instrument panel which changes color to gray. But the gray wire at the inst. panel carries multipe parts of info being a serial data wire and shouldnt be cut or bypasses. Not sure if just unplugging the module would work. If you simply pull both fuses, there is a possibility the light will still come on and unless you are removing the ABS parts underhood and replacing them with conventional brake parts, removing the 60A fuse isnt recommended.

If trying to locate the EBCM, look for a module with these colors : red, brown, purple, black, black-white, lt.blue, lt.blue#2, yellow, tan, dk.green, yellow-black. I found a pic of the harness and what pin these colors fo to. Its a 2-row harness and has 8-pins each row to equal 16pins. All pins are not used. Im still searching on the location.

Hey Mike, do you think its possible to run the ABS as a stand alone system on my first gen? I don't need no stinking idiot lights to me it's not working if that would be a problem.

IDK....Since the unit seemingly is stand-alone maybe. Youll need wheel sensors. I wonder is the 2nd gen knucles would work on a 1st gen?. I wanna dig into this more B4 I make assumptions. Kinda curious about it myself. But I dont have any intentions disableing mine.

The spindles fit, I think some first gens had 4 wheel ABS. In my case I'm using the ATS tall spindle which also has the wheel sensors.

Sorry Hammer Head for stealing you thread. You know how I am.

Oh yeah, now I remember the later 1st gens having the red ABS emblem on the back. Then adding a 1st gen ABS should be easy. Not sure if the controller is the same or similar.

No problem about steelin the thread.. it's ABS (does the stand for All Bull****??). Yep you can swap the spindles over.. you could also just get some 2nd gen rotors w/ the reluctor rings & find some ABS sensors & mount those up. All they do is bolt to the splash guard.

Still getting rid of the ABS? I saw delet lines somewhere even though I know you will make your own.

Apparently I forgot about checking on the EBCM controllers whereabouts. I looked and its actually centralized with the ABS motor under the hood. Harness comes from the firewall and into it on the fender side. Has the afformentioned colors. For the record Kelsey-Hayes makes the unit. Mine has a ssteel top...which I polished one time. Hehehe Bored I guess

I was just curious what it would take. I'll keep the ABS since it keeps me from lockin the wheels. haha. Maybe I'll change my mind but for now.. I don't believe I will.

Since its more-less a stand alone part, it should be removable but might throw a code.

That's what I was thinking.. thanks

i know a few years ago i didn't want ABS so i pulled that 60A fuse. it worked but it also took my cruise control with it. later i tried putting the fuse back in and the ABS light is still on, cruise still dosn't work.

Hammer Head

Hmm.. I don't use cruise. Would removing that throw any codes?

Probably the dealer would be the best place. Make a friend there so 1. they wont charge you for a 2 second operation 2. they wont hassle you about mods 3. they wont check the issue instead of just clearing it and then tell you that $$$$$$ of work needs to be done to fix issues.

Hey...you guys seem pretty knowledgeable...maybe you can help me.
I've got a 2000 sonoma for my father in law, it was pretty beat up but ran great....2wd, 4cylinder, auto, extended cab
Anyway, the ABS light is on and my decoder will not pick up the error code. The prevoius owner unplugged the ABS module (under the hood mounted on drivers fender)....I plugged it back in and it hums and rattles like the ABS is activated and running.
Any ideas?
Bad wheel sensor?....are they easy to replace?
Bad Module?....are they all the same?

I am pretty mechanical inclined but electrical stuff can be tuff and don't really want to buy a bunch of parts that I don't need.

also working on the Airbag light but that's for another forum discussion.

Thanks for any help.

No code is a toughy. Bud being the ABS is making noises when connected leads me to believe its either a bad unit or a bad ground.

I'll do some more digging, the truck was in an accident before we got it so there is the chance it could be a bad ground too.
Previous owner said it worked fine until one day it came on and stayed on.

I've been meaning to get a new code reader...which is the best one to get for reading more codes?...abs, air bag and better determine ignition problems.

I bought mine 3-4years ago from the local auto parts for $80 and should be updated with a new model with better pin point accuracy.

i found this ABS unit Actron to be interesting for personal use, looks very handy. anyone ever use this unit? i found it interesting that when you read the description it states under Systems Diagnosed 'And More...' if it was able to diagnose and test all the ABS components it states on our S10's it would be a reasonable priced tool.

i found it for $208.19 at this link on Dealio. (http://www.dealio.com/Actron-ABS-BrakeScan-OBD-II-Scanner---CP9449/ps673752590/#)
(never bought through Dealio tho)

So Jay....did you ever remove it? I'm going to remove mine. Can you give me advice on what to do? Right now i know I'll need a double flaring tool, tubing bender, line, fittings?, what proportioning valve should I use? I got a very rough idea of what to do just not 100%.

Never removed it. Decided it wasn't worth removing.

It's alittle diferent. I have 4 wheel ABS. My truck is going to be sitting on jack stands for a coulple of weeks so it would be a good time to do it. I just want alittle guidance from some one thats done it. Every time I read a thread about it on other forums the thread ends up taking a different route.

I might just use that link as a guide. I've read it so I have a close idea. I just dont want to be putting the wrong lines in the wrong places or using the wrong proportioning valve or something.

Look on s10f. Most of the bag guys remove it.
