View Full Version : History of the S-10 Xtreme

Ok, from what research ive done the chevy s10 xtreme we see drving around today is actually not the first xtreme truck that chevy has seen.
The Xtreme force used to be a stock s10. But some guys made a body kit, and used the zq8 suspension, put about 450 horses under the hood and the xtreme force was born.

Origonal Xtreme force
Heres a clone of the xtreme force

Note this is a 94-97 s10 with the boyds, the xtreme kit and a newer front end.
CHEVROLET X-TREME FORCE
Let's face it. If a truck doesn't do it for you when you punch the gas, everything else is a waste. Take it from us, X-treme Force will do it for you. This Orange Glow S-10 Fleetside with grafted-on Sportside rear fenders can run and handle with today's hottest production cars.
The heartbeat of this pickup is a GM Motorsports 450-horsepower 4.5-liter V6 that's stuffed with aftermarket speed parts and hooked to a 4-speed automatic and 4.10:1 rear. This combination is potent enough to haul this hauler down the quarter mile in a scorching 13 1/2 seconds. To put this into perspective, that's quicker than the '97 Mustang Cobra SVT that we tested last month (see "Showdown!" page 58).
For those into nipping apexes and drifting around on-ramps, GM's ZQ8 suspension meets the challenge. Ride height is cut 2 in., while gigonda BFGoodrich tires (275/40ZR17 front, 335/35ZR17 rear) on Boyd wheels provide the all-important contact patches. No point in putting this baby on the roof. That's beyond extreme.
The beauty of this package is that the extreme hormones needed to transform any stock S-10 2-wheel-drive pickup into the nasty X-treme Force version you see here are available at any Chevrolet dealer parts counter. So even you can move from the fast lane into the extreme lane.
Now of course this isnt what we see today, but aparently chevy liked the look of it, and actualyl put the truck into production,, added a new valence tho. The Xtreme force was the first ever Xtreme built, it is why we see Xtreme trucks today.

This truck I actually remember. I always wanted to do the stepeide flares on a fleetside box. Looks tough! I was also wondering if anyone remebered the SLP s-series trucks? They had an Adventure which was a Jimmy or Blazer conversion, a Seeker which was the S10 conversion and suposedly the inspiration for the xtreme, and also the Xpress the Sonoma conversion. I have the original literature of these and the part #s for the accesories which was the body kit, speed grille, wheels, emblems, fllormats and key fob. Additionally you could get a 1.6 rocker pkg, underdrives, exhaust, brake pkg., handling pkg., and/or a 2wd or even a 4wd lowering kit. The body kit looked like an Xtreme kit but a little different. The fact they Jimmy/Blazer body kit was for the 4dr was unique since there was no actual Xtreme kit for those(only a 2dr). This probably would've sold more if more marketing was done. A guy on e-bay regularly sells the SLP old-stock stuff and occasionally has some of this s-series stuff. I believe its ACS or ID tinylittlecars. Ill see if I can get some pics of the trucks.

I like that body kit a lot better than the what was on the production floor.. at least what I got. I still think the Xtreme appearance pkg looks tacked on. I have the same fronts, rears are about 3/8" narrower (315/35-17).. & what's this 13.5 in the 1/4 BS? They could of knocked off a full second to second & a half if they used a V8. That extra torque would have really helped out. Oh well.. Still looks cool.

I somewhat agree with HHead. If the side skirts were just extentions like the TrailBlazer package S-Blazer, the front valence would need not have the lower section flare out and it could roll under a little more. The back would match easily too. Ive seen a front valence I like....maybe it was the StreetSceene 1st production one, I cant remember...thats kinda what Im talking about. Its one that looks good alone without any side skirting. I was going to get the TBlazer side skirt and mod it to fit...basically cut at the bed....and get the valence I like. But Id just rather spend the $ elsewhere now. Im not knockin the Xtreme package, its a cool truck. Its just too much 4 me. The dealer here had a black one 4.3 5sp stepside reg. cab with no power opts. and i almost bought it. But it was already scuffed down low and the streets here would be brutal on it.

Yea, I like the looks & all but because the valance got scuffed up I don't enjoy the body kit anymore. That's why I plan on pullin it off one of these days.

I like the X kit.....on someone else's truck. If I had a second gen it wouldn't be the extreme. It's the same as the Syclone and Typhoons, over done IMO

Yep.. wait. Are we supposed to be bashin the X or diggin it in the X section?
Mikz86TA
06-06-07, 02:21 PM
Well....I guess no one else cares for a pro-X opinion to be posted, so well just keep on knocking it around untill we piss off a X owner. Heheheh. J/K As I said, theyre a cool truck but not 4 me. I still like the fleetside with the flares. And the orange is pretty cool color....but not for an everyday drver. I really want a SunsetOrangeMettalic RamAir TA or Firehawk. Hard to find and harder to afford right now.

How the hell did T/As and Firehawks get brought up?

Funkin Mike, that's how.. damn F body purists. I'm pissed off, being an X owner, I have to have an X forum soiled w/ F body crap! ...haha, jk.. kind of.
does anyone know if those flares are available? those damn things are hot. i would love to (eventually) get a set of those....

cut em off a stepside and tack weld on then finish off smoothing in. Ive never seen any for sale like that anywhere.

Or you could swap stepside bed sides onto a fleetside bed.

IMO, i wish GM would have backed up the X package with a 5.3 or even a 4.8.
to me, i consider xtreme to be a truck that will haul ass, not just one that looks pretty.

i like the flares on the bed i would tub it also :) that would house a monstrous tire hye dont knock the fbody guys too hard i used to be one but as far as the x truck ground effects go they are nice but anymore i like to shave everything off

It is a shame that the X's are just looks and handiling. You know they prolly had something planned but deemed it too exspensive. I still think a
Radix 112 is the answer.
Hammer Head
06-06-07, 08:53 PM
I think the truck Mike was talking about had a 4.3 w/ an intake that looked kind of like a 3.8 GN.. They claimed there was supposed to be a power upgrade but we all know what happened.

06-06-07, 09:51 PM
Yeah, nothing. For some reason GM just don't get it that there is a market for sport/ super trucks. I guess thats what they were trying with the Silveraldo SS. We all know how well that worked out.
Mikz86TA
06-06-07, 10:04 PM
The lower portion will need to be retained off the fleetside and youd still need to graft it on. But that might be easier and less forming than the other option =)Or you could swap stepside bed sides onto a fleetside bed.

The old 454SS had sparked a tremendous response. Hell even Ford saw the potental of a true sport truck. Dodge to follow as well. The orig reg cab SS Silvy prototype was pimp. I know the ext cabs sell more these days but to me its a disgrace. Back in the day an SS on vehicles was a Hi-Po 2dr car. Now they put the SS moniker on a friggin 4dr Malibu. The Impala I will give some leway to(90s Impalas). The newer ones are shameful. As is the horrible representation of the MonteCarlo......even the reg Monte is a disgrace. Style of the Monte is fine but the wrong wheels drive it. And they even took extra effort to fool us by modifying a 5.3 to put in there sideways. Comeon GM. Are you seriously paying attention to the American way of life....or just trying to mock the s**tass poor excuse for a vehicle imports. And SS cobalt.....hmm, they shouldve just stuck with Z24 on that. SS should equal no less than V8 and RWD!!! Preferrably 2dr. VENTING OVER FOR NOW I remeber the orig SS S10 idea having a V8. I remember the orig Xtreme idea also to have a V8. We saw how far that made it now dont we. And yet I see them tease us again with a possible Colorado SS with a V8. Dont bet on it! Itll probably be the lame 5cylinder peice of work with a tiny bit bigger cam, the sport susp, a body kit/wheels, some boltons you couldve just done youself and a high $ tag. Awww...why arent these selling?

Nice truck...thats the hood I want BTW. SScene used to have it on their silver Sonoma show truck but told me it was custom made. Ive seen it on a few others B4. A couple e-bay trucks for sale had it. SScene told me they were going to put it in production but that was in January. Havent seen it yet. I want that truck entirely...snuglid,hood,stepshavers and V8 !!!! YEAH!!!

Latest news from GM is the Zeta is back on the rado is getting a 5.3L everything worth buying is gonna be RWD with a V8 GM listens it just ain't easy turning that big ol battle ship but she looks to be going the way we want her to. It's gonna be like the 60's all over only we'll have power windows and A/C we'll be faster too. There is hope yet.

Ive seen the new Pontiac G8. If you havent yet check it out. Definately a step in the right direction and its what the Impala SS should be. It basically a 4 dr. GTO. A 6.0L, 6sp manual or auto, RWD, the works. And potiac is going to make a GTP version as well. Basically they are modeling these ,as they did the GTO, off the Holden cars. Holden is GMs brand in Austrailia. They dont have as strict EPA laws as us and they apperently have a taste for good ol americam muscle. Hell, they even have a model thats a newer version of the ElCamino called the Maloo . How cool is that! RWD,big V8,great handling, truck sort of car. See --> http://www.holden.com.au/www-holden/ The Commadore is what the new G8 is based off of. Check also their HSV line. Heres the G8 link --> http://www.pontiac.com/g8/
