View Full Version : SES light after racing for an hour...

Well, tonight I decided to take my truck out for some fun, and went racing with my friends. After running it hard for about an hour and topping it out once, we decided to take her home. When I was on the highway, I looked at the speedo and I was only going around 65 when my SES light turned on. I pulled off to see what it could be. Checked coolant, oil, trans fluid and oil pressure levels. All were ok. I believe it could be a misfire, since I recently discovered that my pre-gapped bosch plugs were causing pinging when I accelerate. Or maybe a loose plug wire. I don't have any idea what it could be since the truck doesn't run any different. I also thought it could be a dirty MAF, since I've been running the K&N. Any of you guys have any ideas what could be going on here? Thanks for the help.

take it to autozone and have them check the code

Thats funny.. I never heard of ( pre-gapped bosch plugs ). Do you realy think they make it through all that shipping and keep there gap.
You never just buy them and intall them pre-gapped. Thay don't make a spark plug for each car or truck. They are made for all cars and trucks. Not all cars and trucks have the same gap.
Just my 2 cents

Take it to see what the code is.

I was beating on my truck one time and it all of sudden started running like ****. Followed by a flashing SES. :) Well I popped the hood and I didn't need a scanner to see that I melted 2 plug wires on my headers... LOL.

Wrong.

Never gap plat plugs.

I'll second what T-Man says. You don't gap the bosch two spark and four spark platinums. If you bend them the platimum can flake off and kill the sparkplug and maybe cause cylinder issues.

Now that's not to say that the platinums are always the correct plug for the car. Check first, but yes you can get platinum for our trucks and no you don't gap them. Also don't use them if you are going to to run boost, they aren't designed for that.

X3...And to prevent the shipping issue, which is a legit concern, they place a paper tube around the end to sheild it from damage. Ive always pondered the pre-gap myself. I like to be assured they are correct. You can still check them for consistency, but like already said dont bend the electrode. IMO, a std plug works just as well and is cheaper. Plus it allows you to play with gaps due to changes such as ignition, and also cut-backing.

Ive gotta chime in on things. These are directed at no one in partiular, so dont get butthurt First off, racing is stupid, do it on a track or sit at home on your thumb. I dont wanna get by you or your dumbass friends while you wring your turd honda or whatever else out on the same streets i live and drive on.

Seccond Dont waste your money on the junk platnum plus 2 3 4...9 whatever. You are always going to have one spark.....always. You have multiple pathways to the same ground shich is good if you have an engine that fouls plugs a lot, but if you are fouling plugs that badly you have other things you oughta be spending your money on than 6 dollar sparkplugs...I get the same spark on my 1.29 NGK plugs that someone else does on their bosch plat plugs, plus we have large displacement overhead low revving v6's and 8's (not even going to start on "fast-i-fying" the 4cyls) Even under boost, and extreme boost all you need is a colder range plug, not more grounds. Grrr it pisses me off whenever my sales people sell me platnum plug r&r's. Unless it calls for it from the factory...you dont need it.

Alright..im off my soapbox

I run NGK in everything.

They are designed for a 2 stroke..which means they will be able to burn off fouling that much better. Thats whats in the 87, and soon will be in the oh 3

Since were on the bandwagon....my 2003 came with Delco Platnums..I replaced them with Bosch +4s ( dont ask WTF was going through my mind on that money waste!) . Could I just put in the regular non-platnums and everything will be good? What part #s for the 4.3 Vortec in those? I can cross-reference, so any non-platnum plug thats compatable is good info for me. I just dont know about the length/clearance issue...if any.

Yeah, you can run non plats in em. Supposedly the platnum plugs have longer life because they prevent erosion better, and 5 or 10 years ago I would have told you that is a true statememt, but with plug tech. nowdays you see non plats with r&r intervals of 50-100k. Go ask for a set of NGK's for your truck....i think somewhere Sparky even posted the PN

I think the seven plugs (one broke) in the LSx heads I've got are NGKs. They have about 500 miles on them. .708" reach & 14mm is exactly the same as what we've got goin on in our heads.. at least the vortec heads.

not true, NGK's are damn good plugs I know many people who wont run anything BUT Ngk's

and on the Bosch Platinum's, IIRC they run too hot and can cause misfires in our trucks They are a 100% waste of money
