Hey Everybody,

I took a pic of my Silverado with a carb scoop on the hood as a joke, a guy saw the pic and desperately wanted one on his own ride. So he had asked me to adapt the scoop like what I've got on my rat rod to his fuel injection on his 02 Silverado 4.3L.He currently already has a K&N KIPK and 1" TB spacer. So far so good, I can make it using some of my existing parts... I said I'd help him but he's on his own for cutting the hole in his hood. This is as far as I've gotten, I used the scoop from my engine and my 04 Silverado 4.3 for the mock up. I'll ask you guys a few questions along the way....

this is the base plate I made for the scoop using 16ga steel that the mass airflow sensor bolts to. A modified 4" to 3" plumbers pipe adapter for the mass airflow to sit directly on top of the throttle body. Do you guys see any problems in the long run having the mass airflow sensor directly over the throttlebody?

You can also see the vacuum operated choke pull off mounted on the front of the plate. I'll get to that in a bit.

The scoop mounted and sitting on the TB. The factory mass airflow harness pigtail is long enough to run over to the relocated sensor. No modification there. So far so good, everything clears.

I made the MAF mount so far back in the scoop because of cowl clearance. but thats ok, the weight of the front of the scoop can be supported by an OE bracket used to hold the accelerator & cruise control cable.

The scoop on the engine. It fires, it runs, it idles. so far so good. Because the guy who I am making this for has a black chevy truck. I figured I would order him a black wrinkle finish scoop instead of a polished aluminum like mine.

Here you can see the vacuum choke pulloff & return spring in action. when it recieves manifold vacuum it will pull open the butterfly valves. I feel I will have to tap into the vacuum brake booster because it is the only external vacuum source I can find on a newer vortec 4.3L. Any suggestions? I'm still working on this part, ideally I'd like to have the butterfly valves closed at idle and open off idle. Plus have them stay open at WOT with little or no manifold vacuum.... I feel it will be a combination of parts, a one way check valve and a transfer case vacuum switch triggered off the throttle body, maybe.

And a close to finished product! I'm open to any suggestions or ideas so please comment.... I know the whole idea is cheesy and it's just for looks without any potential performance gains. But I think the dude will be happy.

It's under the scoop & above the TB... 3rd & 4th pictures from the top.

The MAF is directly attache with the boot to the ThrottleBody and the scoop attaches to the MAF on top of that. I have one though....where is the IAT sensor? Also the butterfly thing is gonna take some thought. No filtering either

i see it now. Im thinking thats a bad deal.

Those wires in the maf sensor are heated similar to an o2 sensor. Im wondering what the direct heat from the motor will do to it.

I was thinking more along the lines of weathering...hope it doesnt rain while your driving. It looks realy cool but not practial

Well, they make up air filters that bolt up to the MAF & are used when putting the MAF & air cleaner on the TB.. so, IDK.. but the aftermarket is doin it & I haven't heard of any complaints about it.

I'm still working on filtering, and I just realized in my rush of an evening that was last night I posted in the wrong V6 thread :P Mod please move to 90 degree thread.

You're all right, not practical for use in bad weather.... but here in Az it rains/snows for 20 days out of the year. and if he insists on using the scoop in poor weather, he can pay me to fab & paint a bolt on hood scoop to cover his engine

I haven't seen any air cleaners that bolt directly to the MAF... any links?

where is the IAT sensor?

IAT are built into the MAF, at least on this guys 2002 & my 2004.

A few changes to the base plate, decided to make it work in 2 pieces... let the Choke pull off stay with the scoop if ever the MAF and scoop need to be seperated. Also ran a longer butterfly valve return spring and notched the Choke pulloff plate for the other end of the spring.

Still haven't solved the filter hurdle, I am inclined to use the paper filter that comes with a new scoop and making an adapter that will hold the air cleaner stud like a carb.

I convinced the guy he should go with a black scoop, I found a cheap one of these scoops via Ebay... so when it arrived I painted it black.

Solved the filtering question, it's as simple as sandwiching a small round filter between the top of the inside of the scoop and the made base plate... seals good.

Still haven't found the right parts to allow the buttery fly valves to close at idle... but I'm working on it.
