Parking Brake won't engage

I've got trouble with the parking brake mechanism inside the cab of my 02 Extended Cab. The system is fine from the rear drums all the way up to the pedal. When I push down the pedal to engage the parking brake, it doesn't hold. How big of a deal is it to detach the mechanism and repair/replace it?? Anybody have any suggestions??

Before you R&R it.. are you sure of adjustment? ...btw welcome to the Planet

Thanks! Yes, I've checked adjustment. Seems like the dog or whatever is supposed to engage just isn't kicking in. It's pretty cramped under the dash and I can't get a real good look at the mechanism. Oh, yeah ... Thanks to the Planet for being here :-)

Welcome to The PLANET!!! Is the spring still on the foot pedal mechanism?

Yes, I think the spring is still on. If I push the pedal down, it pops right back up.
