For a while now this has been a heavily debated topic. Ive seeked more and more info on it and have come up with a few good GM sources that can possibly help define the limits of the truck.
First is defined by Suspension RPO and is taken directly from a 2003 GMC catalog.
RPO / Basic Definition / Drive Type(s) / Usage / Cargo / Trailering / Ride / Shocks / Tires / Wheel
Z83 - Smooth Ride - 2WD - Paved Roads - Good - Lt.Duty - Smooth - 32mm - 205.75.15 - 15x7
ZQ8 - Sport Ride - 2WD - Paved Roads - Good - HeavyDuty - Firm - 46mm - 235.55.16 - 16x8
Z85 - HD Ride - 2WD 4WD - Paved Unimproved Roads - Maximum - HeavyDuty - Very Firm - 32mm - 205.75.15 - 15x7
ZR2 - HighRider - 4WD - OffRoad - Good - HeavyDuty - RideControl - 46mm - 31x10.5.15 - 15x7
This will give you a idea of the overall ideas behind each suspension setup.
