View Full Version : Could it be the water pump??

On my 'new-to-me' Blazer (CPI), the coolant looked dark - not really oily though, but I replaced the radiator because I thought that maybe the oil or tranny cooler lines may have been bad, causing the discoloration. Well, now I am constantly adding coolant/water - about 6-8oz after every drive and the coolant is still discolored. I'd think if I had an air bubble it would have been out by now. No real temp issues... although it does flucuate slightly at times - 10 degrees or so.
So, anyhow what else could the discoloration be? Rust? The guy I bought it from replaced the water pump, but I think the sound (bearing noise - like someone threw marbles in something) is from the water pump. Also, could it be weeping when it is running and burning off? I never see coolant anywhere... However, I don't want to replace the water pump on a whim!! Any thoughts?

the waterpumps are easy to replace and dirt cheep. Another thing, if you arent seeing anything on the ground at all, it may be the head gaskets. Fire it up and run it with the radiator cap off, you see bubbles....youre in bad

Yeah, water pumps can be cheap... trouble is I'd buy this one instead:

I've had one on the Baja and now on the other Blazer and just can't go back to the ol iron ones...

I'll check for bubbles this evening... hope it isn't a head gasket - I'd think I'd have more issues... BUT, hey it would be a good 'excuse' to do a top-end rebuild and cam!

My '93 for about the last year i drove it was always slowly loosing coolant. Check around, didn't see anything leaking. I never saw anything on the ground. Thought, it might be more serious things, so I didn't even wanna know.

I went to swap that Rad with my sisters '94 one night (long story). Pulled mine out. Saw a small dent with a very slow coolant leak on the back side of the rad, near the passenger side corner, out of site. :censored_ :censored_:censored_:censored_ must have leaked inside the radiator support or on the skid plate. Never saw a drop on the ground.

Something must have somehow fell into it front inside the engine compartment when I was working on it months & months before.

Well, I just checked it and it is fine this time... so maybe it was air in the system from replacing the radiator after all... BUT that doesn't explain the bearing noise - like someone threw marbles in something... could that be the clutch fan? I can turn the clutch fan easily, so it is bad...
