View Full Version : need more electricty
right now I have three amps, a pioneer cd player, m3 mirrors with the lights, and fog lights. when ever I come to a stop light, sit in a parking or just drive slow my volts go way down. I know I pretty much need a bigger alternator but should I get a dual battery setup. is it worth it or just get a bigger alternator and a capaciter? I also wanted to know how many amps a factory alternator has?

I recommend a dual battery set up, you have enough room in a blazer to hook it up so you shouldnt worry to much, even with a cap, the head lights can still play their game, also you should have a cap on each amp, at least 1 Farad IMO.
Yeah, bump up the alt. Stock S 10's come with a 105, just enough to push the factory stuff with a little left over. I dont know totally about the caps', but I can tell you that a bigger alternator will give you your biggest gain. If you can, at the same time, hook up another batt.

A nice big alternator will be the sure fire fix. I'm not too keen on capacitors though. In electrical systems that have continuous current draw a capacitor can actually hurt the system. It can only store up as much extra current as the alternator makes. If the alternator is alreaddy tapped to fulfill the needs of useful electrical components, trying to keep the cap filled to its 1 farad (or whatever) capacity will be additional strain. Caps are only good for 1 good burst of power. After that, they're giving out power faster than they can recieve it, so they are never full until the current draw pauses or diminishes enough to allow excess energy to be stored... and then expelled immediately after.
