Ok I just bought an '00 exstreme finally. The hole front end was burned from the firewall forward. The only thing good was suspension, brakes, well put easely everything from the frame up is gone. I took the 4 banger out and put a 4.3 from an '01 s10. So I dont know much but the front end is s10.
So I need some help to know what the extreme has that an s10 doesnt as far as under the hood and body parts.
I know it has fender flares but dont know what kind and where to find them. Theres so much to chose from.
I got the grill and bumper of another extreme so thats good. What realy bothers me is that the engine is from an s10 and dont know if it qualifies as a true extreme lol. Truck only has 7k miles on it, great find huh? Engine has about 50k miles, and I used the instrament panel from the extreme.
So if someone could give me info on the diffrence between the the 2 trucks. I would appreciat it!!

An Extreme has the ZQ8 handling package (suspension) and the body kit. That is the only differences.

I just bought an '00 exstreme frome an auction and brought it back to life.
The hole front end was burned from the firewall forward. I got an '01 S10 for parts so the whole front end is S10.
I need some help knowing whats diffrent in the 2. I got a bumper and an grill off another extreme so thats good. I need help finding fender flares! I found a bunch but dont know what 1 to use to look just like the original.
And as far as the engine is there a diffrence under the hood and if so what?
The suspension and brakes are originall though.
I just need a quick info on the diffrence between the two trucks if there is any.

s10warehouse on ebay will have any of the body kit you need.

The fenders, hood, etc will be the same as to any other 1998-up S-series. The Xtrema had a painted front bumper, a full painted grille, specific Xtreme valence to match the body kit, fenders had slight wheel flares and it had fog lamps in the valence. GM provided an extention harness from just behind the parking lamp area to the valence for the fogs. The side body kit was a single part on the cab and only regular or extended cab specific. X2 on the S10Warehouse on E-Bay for cheaper replacement panels. On a FYI, as Eric described the Xtreme is just a body kit on a ZQ8 suspension. Can be had in a 2.2 or 4.3, auto or manual, stepside or fleetside and reg or ext cabs. LS interior was standard but it could have no power options and/or a bench seat.....or it could be fully equipped. There was a few more rare options. One called a HEAT, which featured flame decals behind the rear wheelsand HEAT decals on the rear sides. One was an 'appearance package' which featured gold inlays on the wheels, gold overlays on the Xtreme/S10 emblems and gold racing stripes. Last was another appearance package which had racing stripes also. Color of those stripes depended on the trucks color. Also the X had different 16x8 wheels. The suspension was the ZQ8. Which could be gotten on a regulat LS truck as well (like mine) and earlier S-10s had it availible on the Base (non-LS) trucks. Sonomas had a ZQ8 on SLS late models as well and an upgraded ZRX (StreetRider) packege unique to the Sonoma. ZQ8 Suspension included a 33mm front and 23mm rear sway bars, Bilstien shocks (DeCarbon on earlier models), QuickRatio steering box (12.1:1), Lower front coil springs, Lower rear leafs, 16x8 wheels and 235-55-16 tires, some had a HopShock and also there was an additional FrameBrace behind the cab.

The only things keepin me from doin that are..
1. IDK if the brackets I have now will work w/ the new valance (going from Xtreme valance to regular S10/Blazer valance)
& 2. I'd like to have the step shaver kit installed & painted.. unless someone here has some bumper ends for a step side they'd like to get rid of/sell so I don't have two holes in the back of the truck. hahaha..

Regular S10 Valence with a Painted bumper (like mine) just clips into the openings on the bumpers bottom lip. I think that was all. Ill check. I had 2 remove it once to re-align the bumper. Had a small accident..oops. You need pics Jason?

Haha..Its all good. I was just pickin on ya. I really dont care. My last name gets butchered, so Im used to it. Also, when someone 1st reads Michel, they associate it with Michelle and not Michael. So in school, the 1st weeks of a new class were fun. I always know when my last name is going to get it. They start out strong "Fo.." than get softer, repeat Fo and attempt to spell it out. Actually amusing sometimes. Hehehe

Lucky find an xdime with only 7k on the chassi but the engine has 40k.

Origanall is an '00 x10 with a 4banger engine and auto trans completely stock with only like 7k miles on it. The engine burnt lol so I picked it up at an aution. Then bought an '01 s10 stock as well with a 4.3 auto trans and droped that in. So most of the front is the s10 the cab back is x10.
The rear end is stock x10 but I did put IrockZ rims 16" with 50 series tires. I had a friend follow me goin 60mph in his truck I was goin 80mph, and I was goin 25mph and a speed trap said I was goin 15mph. I would give you more times but our speed limit here highway is 60 and my friend is a wuss lol. I think a need an HP Tuner.
Mikz86TA
11-25-07, 02:42 PM
The problem with your speedo is gearing. The PCM for the 4.3 is calibrated from that gearing. A 4.3 Auto most likely had a 3.42 gear. The 2.2 either had a 3.73 or 4.10 gear. If you have the 245-50-16 on those Iroc rims like the Irocs had, then the difference between the stock S10 ZQ8/S10 Xtreme 235-55-16 isnt going to make that much of a speedo difference. The overall height difference is not that great.
Your best bet is to have the PCM reflashed, get a 3.42 gear or a Hypertech/Jet tuner/HP Tuner. Find your orig gearing ratio by looking it up on the white RPO label in the glove box. GU# or GT# will be it. Post that and we can tell you what it is. This being you kept the original diff in there.

Thanx woof woof for the info I totally forgot about the gear diffrance in the 4 banger. I'm goin to change the gearing first of all cuz 3.42 is better to work with. Is changing the gearing a pain in the rear or would it be better to change the whole rear end. I can pick one up at a junk yard probly wont cost any diffrent if i grabed the whole rear.
Im no pro machanic so changing gears might be trouble.
Mikz86TA
11-26-07, 02:10 AM
3.42 is probably a better all around gear for most driving. 3.73s arent too bad with OD and lockup converter, but will still turn some RPMs. The 4.10s ar just too much IMO for a street vehicle. Fun for the 1/8th and 60 ft times tho.
Changing them isnt hard as long as you follow the steps and take your time. There are a few things you need to know and understand 1st. Setting them up takes a few tools to verify its correct.
If just getting a 3.42 rear from a wreck, finding a low-mile (under 70K at least IMO) is key.

There are a couple things in the 'setup' of gears. First, your carrier that the Ring gear is on can be shifted from side-to-side. There are sometimes shims in the sides or one side from the factory and when replacing carriers, there is the need to adjust it. Sometimes it goes in the same, sometimes it doesnt. Second is the Pinion depth front to back.
You must install them first and determine if they are correct by using a marking compound on the gear teeth, spinning the gears and meshing them on the compound area ,and them obseving the pattern in which they mate. Forward and Reverse. The front side is known as the DRIVE side and the back side is known as the COAST side. When accelerating, the gears mesh on the Drive side and when coasting....well, you get it =). Sometimes the pattern will be meshing in the upper portion, lower portion or center portion. Also it can be toward the edge or center of the gear. Backlash is also another key in gear setup. That is basically clearance between the 2 gears. A Dial Indicator is used to measure this in thousants-of-inches.
Improper wear and failure at worst or noises at best are 2 outcomes of improper gear 'setup'.
Most of the time, just doing gears will not need much if any 'setup'. As long as attention to where everything was and a new CrushSleeve are done.
Doing a Carrier and gears almost always involves the need for 'setup'

Never seen ZQ6. But if it was a Blazer X, it has ZQ8. Unless they used a different RPO for the blazers. But the X-Blazer was tthe only Blazer with lowered susp. There was never a LS/ZQ8 like you could get in the trucks. Wouldve been cool tho.
The blue and yellow shocks are Bilsteins. But the Bilsteins are used on the ZQ8 sport susp, Z85 HD susp and some other models like 4wds and such. Just different part numbers and rates.
Top of my head I cant remember the RPO for the Extreme pkg. But I would look for it and see if its on that donor. It would suck to get almost done and realize you just put in the same part.
Was there a tag on the coils with a 2-letter code? If so what is it?
Doublecheck the RPOs on the donor.

Ok the truck is a '01 Blazer LS it has Bilstein shocks sway bars front and back. But the rpo says its a ZQ3 and ZQ6 so kinda worried if the coils are the ones to match my truck. I know it had a 4.3 in there so the coils should take the wheight but not shur if they are higher than tha ZQ8.

Well, out in the junkyard today I noticed every 2dr and a 4dr Blazer had both these codes. They also had the Bilstien (blue/yellow) shocks and none were a sport susp or ZQ8. It seemed like a basic LS with power opt pkg for the Blazers. Most 2000-up Blazers had the bilstiens.
I think that Blazer is just a reg LS model. If it had the Xtreme GFX, they were added. The X would definately have the ZQ8 on the RPO. But, they could be aftermarket springs.

Youll need the brake line that is strapped across the axle which ends at the flex line (flex line from body to axle). Id replace the caliper to hard line rubber lines, but go ahead and snag those too. Get the calipers. Slide tha axles out and get the backing plate the calipers mount to. There is 4 bolts that attach it to the axle tube end flange. Get the rotors for a core swap if you intend on replacing those. I would
Calipers shold be in good shape, but a rebuild kit is availible.
Rotors may need replacing or upgrade.
Flex lines I would replace. There are Russel and Earls braided kits for the front and rear lines, which is a good upgrade.
Backing plates have the mount for the calipers, mounts to the axle flange (same on drums) and has the park-brake shoes (may need repplacing but hard to come by.
Hardware I would just get it all in case you need something.
E-Brake cables I would get too. Its easiest to unbolt the backing plates and feed them over the axle to the drivers side. Its almost impossible to remove the e-cables from the backing plates. There is a looped holder you will need to unbolt. Also you may need to remove the cable in the truck to free up slack. Then there is a offset looking metal part that combines the left and right cables that you need to remove. And I cant exactly remember, but there is a end to end tube fitting that holds the inside ad rear cables together. The cables slide out of it which is where the slack comes into play.

Cool so I need a set of braided lines to replace old ones. Rear has only 35k on it so gears should be fine possibly cut or replace rotors and rebuild calipers and new pads to. I'l leave the calipers on the rear and just drop the leafs and take the whole thing. Probly grab sway bar and shocks for parts.
Yup those stock lines look sad. Braided ones look stronger and wider for more flow.
Thanx again Mike!!

FYI Blazer sway bar (rear) and truck swar bar (rear) is different. The front should be the same tho. All Blazers I beleive had the rear sway bar, but I am unsure if the X-Blazer had a larger one than the regular Blazer.
The shocks I am sure are a different dampening rate than a truck shock due to the extra weight of the Blazer. But it may ride good with them.
I bought a kit of Earls brake lines. With my Fr Disc Rr Drum setup on the TransAm, it had 3 lines (L and R Frt Caliper / Body to Rear Diff). The Disc rear set should have 5 lines. The OD of the braided lines was thinner than the rubber stock style. Reason is the ss braid is way stronger and doesnt need 2B thicker. There is a flexible liner inside of the braids. ID is the same size tho. I have heard over on the 3rd Gen F-Body Forum about the earlier Russell sets coming apart. One guy totaled his F-Body due to it. But suposedly they fixed the issue. I have heard no known issues with the Earls and I have had no issues myself.
Heres a pic. Not the best pic but it will give you an idea maybe :

Darn lower control arm is a pain in the ass to change. One of the bushings went so I prceaded to remove it and founnd my hands full then it started to storm I was wet pissed and tired. So round two thw next day haha. Know I know why they dont sel pitman arms fore 2 wheel s10. They dont come off huh.
Whell its fixed now and theres less play in the stearing. Stupid rubber joint needs to go though. A shaft and pinion is next on that list.http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/ee187/ynirider/controlarm.jpgNew Arm

RU talking about the rag joint?
Whats up with the steering shaft?
And by pinion, you mean gear box?
Y NI Rider
12-04-07, 02:05 AM
Yup rag join....never knew they had those. They have to much play in them. I wanna fab somethin to replace stupid rag joint. But dont know if no play will damage the gear box.
First I need to change the coils. They cant take the wheight of the V6 very well. Is there a better coil than the ZQ8 ones. I have a belltech set but I used them before and dont like the ride.

A lot of guys use the lower shaft from an astro/safari van to eliminate the rag joint. ...& no, it won't damage your gearbox. The reason car manufacturers use rag joints is to make the vehicle more comfortable to drive.. less feedback from the road.

A company sells an aluminum disc to replace the rag joint. I know they have them sized for F-bodies. Maybe they have the same size and can be used on the S-series as well. That IDK.

I found its the gear box that has all the play. My machanic put the wrong 1 in. He used one off a smashed s10 f n idiot. Look like I have my hands full. Think I'l park her after the holladays and just build her up.

You may need to redrill the holes...IDK.
The steering box in a reg S-series and a ZQ8/Xtreme are diferent.
The ZQ8/Xtreme box is the old F-body quick-ratio unit. You can get one off of a ZQ8/X or a F-body with 16" wheels. 12.1:1 is the ratio I think.
My 2003 ZQ8 has a white label on the end of it (front) with YJ stamp.

I got a question for yah guys. If I changed the contoll arm and there is still quit a bit of play and its not comming from the rag joint. Where is it comin from? I think its the gear box. Has about 15 to 20 degrees of play.

Probably the gearbox. I assume its turning play?

Well thought I would let yall know that you can get a new ZQ8 steering box from checkers for 380$ minus the core charge of $180. Not bad when there like 350 of ebay rite know. I hope that will improve the handling it jumps all over the road.

ZQ8 and the 3rd Gen Iroc/GTA box should be the same part #. They are the same GM 12.1:1 quick-ratio box. Only difference is the Pittman arm between the 2 vehicles. IDK if it comes with it on or not. If not, you need a puller to get yurs off. Ususally they are a PITA
