So...This may or may not be an idiotic thing to ask...not sure. I'm concerned though. I've noticed sometimes, when I have my foot on the brake and I go to put my truck in Park, occassionally my foot will accidently ease up on the brake, not off, just ease up, and when this happens, my truck dies. Completely shuts off with key still in ignition in the on setting. I figure this possibly can't be a good thing. So...advice...tips...help...would be very appreciated. What am I looking at here? Just need to be sure to push that brake down real good? Or...worse... You tell me. Thanks.
Also, feel free to move this post to the right area if needed. I don't know what the problem is so I didn't know where to post.

yeah doesn't sound like a good thing...however i have no idea where to start to help u out
On older GMs they use to do that when the brake booster diaphram was bad. Don't know if that's the case nowadays though.
Sorry, that's all I got for you. Long day and brain is dead...

Anybody else have any thoughts or opinions on the subject? Just curious. Thought somebody might have experienced this before and could tell me exactly what it is. If not it's fine just trying to get more opinions.
Maybe I am right and you don't need more opinion??? LMAO :p
Seriously though... I would check under the hood with it running and have someone step on the brakes(softly to hard press). Listen for hissing or any other odd noises. Check for loose or cut hoses. Then call the shop if all else fails. :D

When you shut your truck off is there a hiss that sounds like it is from under the dash?
X2 on the booster going bad.

See.. if you have a hydroboost unit on your truck you'll always hear hissing & wurring noises under the dash, which is normal for a hydroboost but not normal for a vacuum booster.. so I guess X3?

I hear no hiss. Though I will try again with the system completely off next time..lol. But no I never noticed any hissing noise. Are you talking about all the time or just when it shuts off while putting it into park?
Tom- I will give your idea a try tonight when my boyfriend gets home. Thanks for the tip.
Edit: Hmm...would I hear the hissing noise inside the cab when I hit the brakes? Tom I know you said to check under the hood and Eric I know you mentioned when I turn off the truck. But I was just thinking and I remember I noticed kind of a hiss noise when I hit the brakes sometimes(I could hear it clearly in the cab and it was coming from under the dash). Also seems like I have to hit the brakes harder than I once did but that may just be because it's getting to the point where I need to get the brakes serviced.
If it is the brake booster, is that expensive? I have $86 to my name .... moving is a biotch on the bank account...

I have a vacuum booster here.. but the pedal rod got cut. Wouldn't be much help unless you pulled your unit apart & swapped over rods.
Heather... I can't tell you on these newer models, I'm not GM certified. In the past we just replaced them ourselves in a couple hours and a 12 pack. :D Price? If you take it to a GM dealership, your looking at some big bucks.
Eric may be thinking you may have a vacuum leak in the HVAC system, which could possibly cause the issue if the leak were bad enough.
Funny thing is... after I last posted, I left to get some stuff done. I noticed a bit of rough idle when turning the wheel. Hmmm OMG You jinx'ed me! LOL

can somebody link me what I need for the brake booster vacuum? Do I need to entirely replace something or... I know it probably depends on what's wrong with it as idk yet my mechanic has been busy and i've been..well..broke. I was just really pushin down hard on the brake while shifting into park and it would be okay but today the truck died twice regardless. I think it's getting worse and I don't want to keep abusing my truck. idk how i'm gonna come up with the money maybe I can get family to help me but I just need to know what i'm looking at parts wise or part number wise so I can find it on www.gmpartsdirect.com (http://www.gmpartsdirect.com) maybe? thx for any help...

www.autozone.com (http://www.autozone.com) then put in 'brake booster'. You may need to set it up that you have an '01 S10 to help in finding the part quicker.

Yea, $140+ for a new booster isn't pretty.
You know what a core is... a deposit saying you will give them your old one. No core deposit if you remove your old one first and bring it in when you buy new one.
Advance Auto: $115 + $50 core
Autozone: $115 + $34 core
Auto Parts Warehouse(online): $105 + $57 core CLICK (http://www.autopartswarehouse.com/products/products.php?year=2001&make_text=chevrolet&model_text=s10&category=brake&subcategory=brake_booster) free shipping
O'Reilly Auto Parts: $109 + $45 core
Then there's always the option of getting a used one for cheap at a boneyard, although there is a risk that it is bad or will go bad too. No warranty after installed and working.

Uh...well today I went to see my mechanic and he was looking for awhile to see what the problem was. He said he could hear something and messed with a few things and tightened some things and then the noise was gone. Afterwards, he wanted me to show him how it dies and it just wouldn't do it so he might have fixed the problem. He said there was a vacuum leak in a few places but he mighta fixed it by tightening things. He said I shouldn't have to do anything else but if it dies like that again to let him know what I was doing and how I was parking, etc, so he knows what to look for. So that's it for now I guess I hope it's fixed! That would be a nice breath of relief ... saving $150+ !

Shoulda known it was too good to be true. :-[ Got to work this morning, go to put the truck in park, sure enough, it dies. I stopped by my dads house as he's pretty good with cars and he tried to get me to show him how it dies and of course, again, it wouldn't. So he looked under the hood with it on and then again with it off and there just isn't anything noticeable to pinpoint what's going on. No obvious leaks, no SES light, ... I don't know. Pretty stumped. I'm going to give my mechanic a call later and let him know it happened again an see what he has to say.
He did bring up how my brakes are kind of "sponge like" and the idle changes when brakes are applied a bit. If that means anything to any of you.
