View Full Version : My homemade cold air blower, check it out!

I wanted to share my homemade idea with everyone. I call it a cold air blower. It isn't attached to the intake but instead it blows cold air all around my K&N cone filter. If some of you have the K&N FIPK kit then you know why I did this. The heat shield they supply is nothing more than a heat sink, all it does is get hot. Then the filter sucks up hot air. I even put some fiberglass shielding on it. After putting this cold air blower on, the area doesn't get hot any more and niether does the heat shield.
Now for those of you who live where it is in the 30's or below right now, this may not be a factor. I live in Tampa,FL so this was a problem. Let the motor get hot and the heat build up under the hood, then go see how hot the area gets that your filter is in. Here is a link to my cardomain page were you can see the pics of my set up. http://www.cardomain.com/memberpage/735399/4
Please check out the rest of my truck while you are there.
Any questions? Let me know I will be glad to answer any.

i guess my question would be....does it really work? have you noticed a difference?

I thought for a second you were gonna say you made a electric supercharger or something lol.If it gets a pretty good dose of cold air to the filter I can't see were it would hurt it.But hot underhood air is not a problem right now were I live. But for the summer that might work pretty good.Looks like you put alot of thought and work in to it so good job.

Yes, I did notice a big difference. Its not much but, I gained about 1.5 tenths in the 1/8 mile. My time also stays pretty consistant now. Doing 6 consecutive runs, starting with a cool motor all the way up to a hot motor, after the 4th run my time when up by 1 tenth. It used to vary a lot starting with the first run, by the 6th run it used to jump up by 3-4 tenths. I used to race in the brackets on fri. night, so consistancy is important. My sons mother starting working on fri. nights so I haven't been in awhile. I want to go to T/T on wed. night to see what it does with temp. being a lot lower than it was 4 months ago. I also want to get to the 1/4 mile track to see what I do there but its a little ways away. The other difference I noticed was in the hotter months, my gas milage improved a little, due to not breathing all that hot air. Over all, my expectations were met. I acomplished what I wanted to do for less than $40 bucks.

I was thinking Electric Supercharger too =). Its kinda queer yet kinda well thought out. I applaud the engeneering genious and resourcefulness. But I will give it too ya for coming up with a well thought out solution to a problem.

Im going to look into a way to open up the air path to the engine bay filter location. I dont want to do like this and add a motor and not a tube. Just try to open up the surrounding area. Plus make it clean and stock looking without harming the integrity of the chassis/etc. Any ideas?

I did figure something out, and will perform it, test it and picture it when I get time.
Just duct some hose inside and put the filter in front a AC vent.. LOL

how did you cover the front end so you dont have a 4"holegaping out? Can we see some exterior fit/finish pics?

Since your on the topic of free power....I read a book a couple of years back on taking a can of some sort and coiling fuel line in it. Take ice and pack it in the the can to cool down the gas...anybody feel like trying it. From a physics stand point, it should work.

Its like a cool can that fuel lines coil through. One interesting idea is the AC lines that get cold under the hood. Have them coil inside the intake tube. AC must be in use tho and the condensation will be an issue.

lol sorry for the triple post. thats pretty much what this is for the most part isnt it? its just hard to route it cuz not having a front plate isnt an option in cali.

yeah i didnt think of it that way i was thinking of it suckin from right under the hood but i guess it is the same thing kind of, i dont have a front plate, im suprised i havent got messed with at all(for the plates at least)

Why dont you just take out the headlight, and put that fan in the hole where the stock air box fed air through??? It would be a "Ram Air" with the fan also pulling air.
I wonder how hard it would be to make the WS6 Hood functional. Make ducting for the scoops.

It works great for what it is, They make a kit JUST like this for carbed v8's and its a pretty penny, the 4" duct line is an old school ram air trick
