Will this help speed up my computer some? I was looking at this one (http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=3113061&CatId=136), is it any good or does anyone have a recommendation?
My thinking tells me if I move as much crap off of my hard drive as I can to an external one it should make my computer faster. Would that be correct?

Yeah you will make it faster. Seagate is a good brand and Western Digital is also a good brand. http://www.tigerdirect.com/ (http://www.tigerdirect.com/) Check this site out.
Props to the boyfriend for knowin that info. lol. He's pretty good with computers. He built his.
If your motherboard supports SATA Connection that's what i'd go with <--- So says Devon..idk lol he told me to tell you though. Now he says ohhh he's look for external hard drive. He says if you're looking for speed he'd go with a SATA Internal...yeaaaaaaa that's enough from me i'm so confused lol...

If ur lookin to make your computer run faster, a hard drive isnt gonna make a lot of difference. Your gonna notice the biggest difference with a RAM Upgrade (Random Access Memory) A hard drive is kinda like a garage...storrage.

What kind of computer do you have Eric? Model number too. You might be able to upgrade RAM which will help and its pretty cheap. But you need to know what you have 1st B4 getting stuff you cant utilize.

for hard drives, go with Maxtor in my opinion, been using Maxtor since my first computer, never had a problem. Also the drive you were looking at, is refurbished
I've been using Maxtor for my internal HDs for a long time without a problem. I currently use a WD Passport USB portable drive and it pulls power from the USB so no external power is needed. Mine is 60gig and you can get them way bigger now, but this does okay for me. I have all my MP3s, back-ups and patches stored on it. The 160Gig are about $100 now, I think I paid $160 for my 60gig 2 years ago.
Yes, in theory, cleaning up and cleaning out your HD can help speed because it allows Windows to build a bigger swap file. More RAM helps ALOT. Boot speed is slowed by a massive registry file. The more programs you install and uninstall, the more messy the registry gets and the slower it boots. It can also load up files that are no longer needed in RAM for programs you've uninstalled but the uninstaller did a crappy job removing the proggy. Those extra files loaded in memory slow it down too.
So..... if you buy the portable drive(which I think is a great idea), back-up all your stuff then go ahead and format the HD and reinstall WinXP Pro. You'll have a fast system again.

I have a Compaq deskpro en. I can't find the model # but I'm tired. Just got home from 3rd shift.
BTW, it's not that slow since I removed a bunch of crap (games and stuff) I was just wondering if it would make it any faster. I was thinking of putting most of my files and programs on the external drive.

it will be even faster if u partition the hard drive to seperate the files so they are smaller areas to search for stuff.....
